Marketing and Communications Coordinator

United Way of Hunterdon County

Job Description

Job Description

Can you spot the story in a volunteer shift, turn it into a compelling reel, design a flyer people will actually read, and write an email that makes someone click, show up, volunteer, or care?

United Way of Hunterdon County is looking for a creative, curious, and hands-on communicator who can help bring the work of our community to life.

One day, you might draft a message from our CEO or create a Constant Contact campaign. The next, you might capture photos and video at a community event, design a flyer in Canva, respond to questions on social media, or sit with a volunteer, community member, or partner to uncover a story worth sharing.

This is a role for someone who has ideas—and knows how to turn those ideas into polished, thoughtful content. You do not need a particular degree or a perfectly traditional résumé. You do need strong work samples, sound judgment, a clear writing voice, creative instincts, and the ability to take a project from “we should tell this story” to published.

About United Way of Hunterdon County

United Way of Hunterdon County brings people and resources together to strengthen our community and expand opportunity for our neighbors. We work alongside volunteers, businesses, schools, nonprofit partners, and community members to advance youth opportunity, healthy communities, financial security, and community resilience.

Our communications should do more than announce what happened. They should help people understand why it matters, see themselves in the story, and recognize how they can be part of what happens next.

What you’ll do:

Tell stories that move people

  • Draft clear, warm, and engaging community messages, emails, social media captions, newsletter content, website updates, event promotions, talking points, scripts, and other communications.
  • Meet with staff, volunteers, program participants, donors, and community partners to identify meaningful stories and translate them into content for different audiences and platforms.
  • Elevate the voices and experiences of community members with accuracy, dignity, consent, and care.
  • Adapt tone and format depending on whether the audience is a family seeking resources, a volunteer, a donor, a business partner, or the broader Hunterdon County community.
  • Help staff turn program information, data, and community needs into language that is clear, accessible, and compelling.

Create visual and multimedia content

  • Design attractive, brand-aligned flyers, social graphics, invitations, handouts, signage, presentation materials, and other digital and print pieces using Canva.
  • Capture and edit photos and short-form videos at programs, volunteer activities, meetings, and community events.
  • Create reels, short videos, graphics, carousels, and other content suited to current social media platforms.
  • Build and maintain reusable templates so the organization can create consistent, recognizable communications efficiently.
  • Organize photo, video, design, and brand assets so staff can find and use them easily.
  • Create accessible content by using practices such as video captions, alt text, readable type, appropriate contrast, and plain language.

Manage social media and community engagement

  • Help plan and maintain a realistic, organization-wide content calendar.
  • Draft, schedule, publish, and manage content across United Way of Hunterdon County’s social media channels.
  • Monitor comments, tags, direct messages, and community conversations.
  • Respond to routine messages in a timely, helpful, and professional way, and route requests for services, sensitive concerns, media inquiries, or partnership opportunities to the appropriate staff member.
  • Identify timely opportunities to join local conversations, highlight partners, celebrate volunteers, and respond thoughtfully to emerging community needs.
  • Stay current on platform changes, content trends, and new formats without chasing trends that do not fit our mission or voice.

Support email communications

  • Draft, design, build, proofread, test, and schedule newsletters, announcements, event invitations, appeals, and other email campaigns in Constant Contact.
  • Maintain email templates and help organize subscriber lists and audience segments.
  • Check links, formatting, mobile display, calls to action, and other details before messages are sent.
  • Review email performance and recommend ways to improve engagement.

What success looks like

Within the first several months, you will have helped United Way of Hunterdon County:

  • Establish a consistent and manageable rhythm of high-quality communications.
  • Create a more organized pipeline of community stories, photos, videos, and campaign ideas.
  • Strengthen the organization’s visual consistency and public voice.
  • Respond to online questions and community engagement more reliably.
  • Tell stories in which community members, volunteers, and partners feel accurately and respectfully represented.
  • Use basic performance data to make smarter decisions about future content.
  • Inspire more people to learn, participate, volunteer, partner, and give.

What you bring

Required

  • A portfolio or collection of work samples demonstrating your writing, design, social media, video, or other relevant creative abilities.
  • Excellent English-language writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with the ability to adjust tone for different audiences.
  • Hands-on experience using Canva to create polished digital or print materials.
  • Experience using Constant Contact or a comparable email marketing platform.
  • Experience creating social media content, including graphics, captions, photographs, and short-form video.
  • A strong eye for visual presentation, detail, and brand consistency.
  • The ability to generate ideas and then independently organize the steps needed to execute them.
  • Strong follow-through, good time management, and comfort balancing planned projects with quick-turn requests.
  • Good judgment when communicating about sensitive community needs and personal experiences.
  • A collaborative, approachable working style and a willingness to ask questions, receive feedback, and contribute ideas.
  • Genuine interest in Hunterdon County and enthusiasm for United Way’s mission and community impact.
  • The ability to work regularly at the Volunteer Center in Flemington and travel to scheduled events within Hunterdon County.

Especially helpful

  • Spanish-language communication skills.
  • Experience with CapCut, Adobe Creative Cloud, or other video and design tools.
  • Experience with website content management, photography, social scheduling tools, email segmentation, or digital analytics.
  • Experience working with a nonprofit, community organization, public agency, school, local business, or mission-driven initiative.
  • Existing knowledge of or relationships within Hunterdon County.

Your experience counts—wherever you gained it

A college degree is not required.

We care more about the quality of your work, how you think, how you collaborate, and whether you can deliver than where you learned those skills.

Relevant experience may have been gained through:

  • Paid employment
  • Freelance or contract projects
  • Volunteer or community service
  • School or training programs
  • Managing communications for a club, small business, campaign, or community group
  • Building your own social media presence or creative portfolio
  • Returning to the workforce after time away
  • A combination of these paths

You do not need to match every preferred qualification. Strong candidates do not always follow a traditional career path, and we encourage you to apply when your work demonstrates the core skills needed for the role.

Work arrangement and schedule

This is a hybrid position, not a fully remote position.

Focused writing, editing, and design work may be completed remotely by agreement. However, regular in-person presence at the Volunteer Center is essential because strong community communications begin with relationships, listening, collaboration, and being present where the work happens.

The regular weekly schedule will be established collaboratively. Occasional evening and weekend work is required for scheduled programs and community events. These are paid working hours and will be communicated as far in advance as reasonably possible.

Equal opportunity and accommodations

United Way of Hunterdon County is an equal opportunity employer. Employment decisions are based on job-related skills, demonstrated experience, organizational needs, and the ability to perform the responsibilities of the position, without regard to any status protected by law.

Reasonable accommodations
