Job Description
The Clinical Research Ophthalmology Imaging Technician supports ophthalmology clinical trials by performing specialized eye imaging, conducting preliminary eye assessments, and ensuring accurate, high-quality data collection in alignment with study protocols. This role works closely with clinical research coordinators, investigators, and ophthalmic teams to deliver compliant, reliable imaging and patient assessments in a fast-paced clinical research environment.
Responsibilities

• Obtain and update patient medical records, ensuring accurate and complete data collection in accordance with clinical research protocols.
• Gather detailed patient history and relevant clinical information to support study requirements and visit documentation.
• Perform ophthalmic imaging procedures, including OCT, SD-OCT, fundus photography, fundus autofluorescence (FAF), fluorescein angiography (FA), fundus photos (FP), and visual field testing, following protocol-specific requirements.
• Conduct preliminary eye function examinations such as refraction, visual acuity testing, and intraocular pressure measurement in accordance with study protocols.
• Administer or assist with prescribed ophthalmic drops prior to imaging and examinations as required by the protocol and within scope of practice.
• Prepare patients for imaging procedures by explaining the process, ensuring proper positioning, and supporting adherence to study requirements.
• Review and interpret ophthalmic imaging and medical photography to identify potential abnormalities or image quality issues, escalating findings to investigators or clinical staff as appropriate.
• Maintain high-quality imaging standards to meet sponsor expectations, regulatory requirements, and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines.
• Prepare procedure rooms with appropriate tools, equipment, and supplies for imaging and ophthalmic procedures.
• Assist with pre-surgical assessments and support minor procedural workflows when applicable and within scope.
• Support patient comfort during imaging and examinations by assisting with basic pain management measures within defined protocols.
• Ensure all activities comply with Good Clinical Practice (GCP), study protocols, and applicable regulatory and institutional requirements.
• Maintain ophthalmic imaging equipment, perform routine quality checks, and troubleshoot minor technical issues to minimize downtime.
• Collaborate closely with clinical research coordinators and research staff to ensure timely completion of study visits and accurate data capture.
• Use electronic medical records (EMR/EHR) systems to document patient encounters, imaging results, and study-related data with a high level of accuracy.
• Contribute to a high-enrolling, long-term clinical study by consistently delivering reliable imaging and demonstrating strong protocol adherence.

Essential Skills

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• At least 2 years of experience in ophthalmology or ophthalmic imaging.
• Hands-on experience operating ophthalmic imaging equipment such as OCT, SD-OCT, fundus cameras, visual field analyzers, and related devices.
• Proficiency with ophthalmic imaging procedures including fundus autofluorescence (FAF), fundus photos (FP), fluorescein angiography (FA), and visual field testing.
• Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR/EHR) systems for documenting clinical and research data.
• Strong understanding of ophthalmic terminology, anatomy, and common ophthalmic procedures.
• Ability to follow detailed clinical research protocols and standard operating procedures with a high level of accuracy.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality data collection and documentation.
• Excellent patient interaction and communication skills, with the ability to explain procedures clearly and support patient comfort.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced clinical research environment and manage multiple tasks and study visits.
• Strong organizational and time management skills to prioritize workload and meet study timelines.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with clinical research coordinators, investigators, and ophthalmic teams.
• Ophthalmology-related certifications (such as COA, COT, or similar) relevant to ophthalmic imaging and clinical practice.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience supporting clinical research or clinical trials, particularly in ophthalmology.
• Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT), or similar ophthalmic certification.
• Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines and their application in clinical research.
• Experience with ophthalmic photography and image grading for research or clinical purposes.
• Familiarity with ophthalmic imaging software and related digital image management tools.
• Interest in building or advancing a career in the clinical research field, particularly in ophthalmology.
• Ability to troubleshoot minor technical issues with ophthalmic imaging equipment and coordinate maintenance as needed.

Work Environment
This role is based in a clinical research setting focused on ophthalmology, supporting a high-enrolling study projected to run for 5-6 years, with potential for expanded hours as the team demonstrates strong performance to the study sponsor. You will work closely with a small research team that includes a clinical research coordinator with some ophthalmic imaging experience and an on-site principal investigator. The principal investigator is typically on-site on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and you will be required to be available on those days for full 8-hour shifts to support study visits and imaging needs. The environment involves frequent use of ophthalmic imaging equipment such as OCT and SD-OCT devices, fundus cameras, visual field analyzers, and related ophthalmic imaging software. You will prepare and maintain procedure rooms, manage imaging equipment, and follow structured clinical research protocols. The role requires professional clinical attire appropriate for a patient-facing research clinic, adherence to clinical and safety standards, and comfort working with patients in a fast-paced, protocol-driven setting.

This is a Contract position based out of Nashua, NH.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $30.00/hr.
