Registered Nurse

Profession: Nursing Specialty: Pediatric Psychiatry Duration: 13 Weeks Shift: 7A - 7P Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum 1 year of inpatient psychiatric experience, including pediatric patients. License: Valid CNA license in Maine Certifications: BLS, MOAB (to be obtained on-site) Must-Have: Experience with adolescent patients, including working with those experiencing autism, self-harm, depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, and trauma.

Description: Immediate start needed. Totalmed interviews followed by manager approval. Must be willing to float between adult and pediatric units as needed. The facility is a free-standing acute inpatient facility. The organization has a contracted ER five minutes away. All patients are medically cleared before admission. Not typical for patients to have lines, drains, tubes, etc. The unit has a total of 50 pediatric beds. Average daily patient census may vary. Patient care will primarily focus on adolescents and pediatric patients aged 5-18. Common patient diagnoses include:

• Autism
• Self-mutilation and harm
• Depression
• Suicidal ideation
• Anxiety
• Schizophrenia
• Bipolar disorder
• Oppositional defiant disorder
• Gender dysphoria
• Trauma and sexual trauma
• Anger management issues

Patient ratios are six psych techs during the day and two during the night. Skills required include:

• Comfort with redirection and de-escalation
• Assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs)
• Monitoring patients every 7.5 minutes
• Acting as a 1:1 sitter
• Participating in physical holds using the least restrictive measures
• Obtaining EKGs if necessary

Support within the department includes a Director of Nursing, a Nurse Manager available during the day, and an on-call nurse practitioner overnight. A psychiatrist will conduct daily rounds and be available on-call overnight. Occupational therapy services are provided seven days a week. There will be security personnel on-site, but they do not respond to patient escalations. Staff from all units respond to patient escalations. The electronic medical records system used is Cerner. Unit-specific equipment includes seclusion rooms and chair restraints. Staff may be required to float to adult units if needed. Weekend rotation includes every other weekend. Holiday work is expected in rotation. Requests for time off must be approved by the manager. Shift times are from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM and from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM. The scheduling system allows for modified self-scheduling. Travelers will sign up for preferred shifts, which will be reviewed to ensure all shifts are covered. If a traveler does not sign up for shifts, they will be automatically assigned vacant shifts. Predetermined weekend rotations are in place. Scrub color is any solid color that appears professional. Unit culture emphasizes teamwork and open communication.
