Maintenance Assistant I

Provides essential custodial maintenance services to other Hospital departments. Performs a variety of limited, supervised maintenance tasks that vary frequently according to assignment. Assists Maintenance Mechanics as requested and directed by Maintenance Management.


MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Responds to calls for custodial services from other Hospital departments; performs routine, organized tasks and activities as directed. Maintains communication with immediate supervisor and the Switchboard Operator.
2. Checks all lighting in and around buildings on a regular basis; replaces bulbs as needed. Reports all lighting malfunctions to the Supervisor.
3. Conducts regular building security checks inside and outside to ensure entry/exit doors are properly secured against unauthorized entry.
4. Performs regular firewatch and equipment checks in accordance with departmental procedures.
5. Moves and arranges hospital furniture and equipment as needed to accommodate meetings, workshops and community affairs. Assists with moving, installing or rearranging equipment, supplies, files, confidential material and other items as directed.
6. Replaces nurse call telemikes as needed.
7. May use plumber's plunger to clear sink drains, toilets, etc.
8. Responsible for collection, transport and disposal of trash, materials for recycling and/or other waste materials from all designated areas of the hospital. Sanitizes all garbage cans and containers on a regular basis.
9. Responsible for collecting, transporting and packaging Regulated Medical Waste in accordance with Hospital infection control policies, State and Federal rules and regulations. Sanitizes all garbage cans and containers on a regular basis.

EDUCATION : High School graduate or equivalency.


EXPERIENCE : Six months.

CONTACTS : Close coordination with employees in own department; frequent contact with other hospital employees, patients and visitors.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS : Stands, walks and bends most of the day. Stoops, crouches, kneels and climbs ladders. Occasionally lifts and moves heavy objects.

WORKING CONDITIONS : May work in areas which are hot, dirty and cramped. Exposed to hazards associated with medical/infectious waste, paints, solvents, chemicals, hot water, electricity, mechanical/electrical tools and equipment. Observes and follows standard precautions for infection/cross infection control as established by the Hospital infection control committee. Must be able to work various shift hours, holidays and weekends. Must be willing to accept regular on-call assignments and infrequent overtime assignments and as needed. Must possess a valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.

1. Collects and transports soiled linen to designated storage area.
2. Shovels snow, spreads sand and ice-melting chemicals as needed. May use power equipment for snow removal including lawn tractor with snowplow or snow blower as deemed necessary by Maintenance Management.
3. Assists with grounds keeping tasks including, but not limited to, trimming weeds, collection and disposal of litter and debris from lawns, flowerbeds, and parking areas. Must be capable of operating hand and power equipment for ground keeping tasks.
4. May function as a courier and/or messenger to collect or deliver supplies, samples, equipment, specimens, etc. May act as a security guard, traffic controller or parking lot attendant.
5. Cleans, maintains and properly stores tools, equipment and materials. Maintains a clean and orderly work area.
6. Must be able to adhere to established standards and procedures as specified in oral and written instructions. Seeks clarification of duties as needed.
7. When staffing needs dictate, will work an alternate shift or be scheduled to work on an on-call basis. Employees scheduled on call must report within 30 minutes of receiving a call.
