Maintenance I-IV

Base starting wage $20.74 per hour. Reports to: Maintenance Supervisor. Typical work hours/days: 12 month/8 hour day. FSLA: Non-Exempt. Salary range: Starting for Maintenance I - $16.56. Starting for Maintenance II - $17.10. Starting for Maintenance III - $17.65. Starting for Maintenance IV $18.19. Board approved: 12/21/2012.

Summary: The maintenance I-IV employee performs assigned tasks relative to maintenance services to ensure acceptable standards of overall safety, sanitation and physical appearance of school district buildings, grounds and property.

Examples of essential duties and responsibilities: The maintenance I-IV employee:

  • Performs ground maintenance activities such as mowing lawns, trimming hedges, removing weeds, and raking and disposing of leaves and refuse.
  • Sprays lawns, shrubs and trees with fertilizer, herbicides and insecticides.
  • Keeps tools and equipment in good working order.
  • Acts as tradesman for an area of responsibility assigned by the supervisor of maintenance and operations.
  • Performs routine maintenance and repair on facilities and equipment, including but not limited to plumbing, painting, electrical, carpentry, grounds, mechanical, etc.
  • Follows all safety procedures and precautions when performing maintenance services.
  • Services heating and cooling units/systems, as specified by manufacturers.
  • Performs unscheduled maintenance tasks as directed.
  • Reports equipment malfunctions or breakdowns to the supervisor as soon as possible.
  • Ensures that work/assignment areas are cleaned and equipment, tools, supplies, etc are properly stored before leaving area on breaks or at the end of the work day.
  • Keeps work areas free of hazardous conditions, i.e. grease/oil spills, excess supplies, equipment, etc. to assure that all safety rules/regulations are followed at all times.
  • Assists other maintenance personnel in their areas of responsibility when necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor of maintenance and operations.
  • Consistently demonstrates effective problem solving skills.
  • Makes all job-related decisions based on the needs of the students and district as identified in policy and by supervisor.

Knowledge and abilities: The individual must:

  • Have a level of skill, proficiency and knowledge of mechanical, electrical and carpentry trades to analyze requirements and the ability to repair school district facilities and equipment and to perform routine ground maintenance.
  • Be knowledgeable of safe maintenance and grounds-keeping practices, procedures and guidelines.

The individual must have the ability to:

  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentage, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Experience and training: Must be able to withstand State of Nevada law enforcement background check. Working condition: Strength, dexterity, coordination, and vision to use keyboard and video display terminal for prolonged periods. Strength and stamina to bend, stoop, sit, and stand for long periods of time. Repetitive fine motor activities, feeling, hearing, climbing and balancing. Vision: frequent near and far acuity, depth perception, focal length change and color vision. Exert force of 50-100lbs occasionally, 25-50 lbs frequently and 10-25 lbs constantly. May involve significant stand/walk/push/pull/carry. Work is performed under the following conditions: Environmental conditions: varies from a climate controlled office setting to work outdoors with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat. Exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to loud and occasional to frequent time periods. Frequent exposure to fumes of vehicles and solvents. Job risk factors: Furniture, playground/office equipment, heavy or cumbersome tools and equipment, potential exposure to hazardous chemicals, bloodborne pathogens, communicable diseases, and power/hand operated equipment and machinery. Bloodborne Pathogens: An encounter with blood or other bodily fluids may occur in this line of work, you will be expected to know and follow the safety steps in the safety training provided. Preventative inoculations are encouraged; For employees covered under MCSD health insurance, this cost would be covered as a preventative measure. For those not covered by MCSD insurance, Mineral County Public Health Nurse offers many of these inoculations for a minimal fee.

Class concepts:

  • Maintenance Worker IV: Under general supervision, incumbents perform the duties described in the class concept for Maintenance Repair Worker III and in addition, function as a lead worker to a regularly assigned crew. Lead work responsibilities include providing training and technical assistance, work assignment and work review, and providing input to performance evaluations. Incumbents are also responsible for implementing security procedures which include securing the work area from unauthorized staff and students and accountability for staff, tools, and equipment.
  • Maintenance Worker III: Under general supervision, incumbents perform the more complex semi-skilled level repair and maintenance work described in the series concept the preponderance of the time. Work situations encountered by incumbents at this level require more judgment and greater troubleshooting skills in order to diagnose malfunctions or adapt methods to accommodate unique requirements. This is the advanced journey level in the series.
  • Maintenance Worker II: Under general supervision, incumbents perform the range of duties described in the series concept. Routine tasks are performed independently, but complex semi-skilled work is typically performed in conjunction with a journey level trades worker or Maintenance Repair Specialist. This is the journey level in the series.
  • Maintenance Worker I: Under close supervision, incumbents receive training in performing the duties described in the series concept and may progress to the next level upon meeting minimum qualifications and with the approval of the appointing authority.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Maintenance Worker IV: Education and experience: three or more years of experience as Maintenance Worker III, performing higher level skilled work environment or certification for seven or more the following areas: Water treatment, water distribution, construction, boiler operations, air conditioning/HVAC, electrical, pesticide application, plumbing, maintenance of telephones/ lines and turf and landscape maintenance.
  • Maintenance Worker III: Education and experience: three or more years of experience as Maintenance Worker II, performing higher level skilled work environment or certification for five or six of the following areas: Water treatment, water distribution, construction, boiler operations, air conditioning/HVAC, electrical, pesticide application, plumbing, maintenance of telephones/ lines and turf and landscape maintenance.
  • Maintenance Worker II: Education and experience: three or more years of experience as Maintenance Worker I, performing higher level skilled work environment or certification for three or four of the following areas: Water treatment, water distribution, construction, boiler operations, air conditioning/HVAC, electrical, pesticide application, plumbing, maintenance of telephones/ lines and turf and landscape maintenance.
  • Maintenance Worker I: Entry level position which may include up to one or two of the following areas: Water treatment, water distribution, construction, boiler operations, air conditioning/HVAC, electrical, pesticide application, plumbing, maintenance of telephones/ lines and turf and landscape maintenance.
