Position Details


Under the supervision of the Senior Director of Pupil Services, will provide clinical assessment/problem identification, crisis intervention, individual and group counseling/therapy, case management and school-based support services to district students with emotional and/or severe behavior challenges and to their families. Works directly with students to understand the difficulties, debilitating behaviors, and negative thought patterns preventing them from educational success. Aids in diminishing those unhealthy thoughts and behaviors, by equipping students with mental tools to make better choices. Assists school team in making appropriate decisions relative to the student's objectives and schools program.

Essential Functions - Typical Duties
Work in concert with the school administration, and other medical personnel appointed by the Board, in the completion of appropriate records and carrying out of medical orders.
Plan and conduct interviews, screenings and/or assessments of students by means of observations and professionally accepted assessments to determine the level of behavior relative to the individual need for behavioral therapy/intervention.
Informs parents and appropriate staff of the need for corrective care.
Plan and implement rehabilitative programs of therapy following established behavioral therapy protocols for individual students that will improve, sustain or restore skills in academic, daily living and leisure activities.
Conduct individual and group therapy to promote rational reasoning, perception and acceptable decision-making skills.
Observe students in the school setting and advise instructional personnel when the need to make adjustments in the instructional program is needed.
Maintain and ensure an accurate student therapy record system. Protect confidentiality of records. Use discretion in sharing of such information within legal parameters.
Notify professional staff, health care providers, and parents with behavior goals and interventions, and student progress. Provide instruction so positive behavior is encouraged and enforced to assist with treatment.
Provide counseling for students using varied methodologies.
Prepare for the implementation of a school behavioral therapy program, following school district procedures. Coordinate and arrange for the appropriate supplies and equipment necessary.
Notify appropriate personnel of any level of abuse, physical, emotional or verbal, and/or apparent use of the influence of alcohol or controlled substances.
Keep current of any new methodologies or developments in the field of behavioral therapy and sciences.
Understand and abide by the National Association of Cognitive Behavioral Therapists Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for Behavioral Therapy, and other AOTA documents relevant to the delivery of behavioral therapy services.
Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and use discretion in sharing such information within legal confines.
Prepares reports/documents service(s) provision and goal progress.
Refers student to additional public/private psychological, psychiatric and/or educationally related counseling services, as needed.
Provides in service training to parents, community agencies, students, district personnel and others as needed.
Recommend adjustments in the school environment when needed to provide for student success.
Exercises ability to build and maintain strong and effective communication skills with parents, staff and agencies.
Monitor student progress.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Perform all duties with an ability to adhere to schedules and time lines.
Plan and organize work with effective time management.
Maintain records and develop treatment plans.
Operate a variety of office equipment.
Implement conflict management training.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications - Education and Experience
Possession of Master's Degree and valid/current LMFT, MSW or certification from an accredited association of cognitive behavior therapy, National Association of Cognitive Behavioral Therapists (NACBT), or Behavior Analysis Certification Board (BCBA). Additionally, meet all California mandated experience requirements, to obtain and maintain valid licensure - two years of experience providing social/emotional and/or educationally related counseling services independently, or under the supervision of a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) issued by the California State Board of Behavioral Sciences.


Alternative Qualification

Alternatively, the successful candidate must demonstrate a minimum of four years in a pre-licensure status working in a clinical environment with K-12 school age students and their families as a Therapist. Also, such pre-licensure candidates must demonstrate the ability to document their application for LMFT/LCSW is presently pending before the California State Board of Behavioral Sciences, for a test date. Such applicants must successfully complete the licensure within 18 months of hiring. Candidates seeking this placement in a pre-licensure status must be under the supervision of a Licensed Therapist (LMSW or LMFT) willing to enter into an Independent Contractor status with the Compton Unified School District, with a minimum seven (7) years professional experience. Any costs associated with the licensed supervisor of pre-licensure applicants shall be the personal liability of the applicant. The willingness to serve as the Licensed Supervisor of the pre-licensed applicant must be submitted in writing as an attachment to this job application. This accommodation is due to the existing backlog of processing licensure applications at the California State Board of Behavioral Sciences.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California Class "C" driver's license with proof of insurance sufficient to meet the District's insurance requirements. Current CPR and First Aid Certification.
