POSITION: Elementary Counselor

QUALIFICATIONS: Rank Il or higher with EPSB certification in School Social Work,
Guidance and Counseling, or School Psychology

REPORTS TO: Principal

PURPOSE: Utilizing leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, School Counselors
promote student success, provide preventive services, and respond to identified student
needs through a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic
career, and personal/social development for all students

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Collaborates with other School Counselors to develop, manage, and deliver a comprehensive school counseling program.
  2. Provides leadership and collaborates with school level administrators and teachers to ensure a comprehensive counseling program in order to improve student learning and well-bring. Educates teachers/staff/parents on the impact of mental health issues on student performance.
  3. Participates within the educational system as a team member on school, district, and state committees and boards.
  4. Assists students, individually, in small groups, or in classroom groups with developing academic, career, personal and social skills, goals, and plans.
  5. Provides individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns and needs.
  6. Provides responsive services to students, families, and staff.
  7. Serves as a member of the district Crisis Response Team.
  8. Serves as an advocate for students by consulting and collaborating effectively with parents, guardians, and/or other community and external agencies.
  9. Coordinates resources in the school, community, and within the district for the fullest academic, career, personal and social development of students in programs such as 504, RTI, Providence School Referrals, and other identified needs by the school/district.
  10. Interprets and communicates formative and summative assessment results and/or educational processes to students, families, staff, and other service providers. Assists the Building Assessment Committee and Building Assessment Coordinator as needed.
  11. Works with a transition team and/or feeder school to ensure seamless transitions of students exiting and entering the school through thorough review of student records and open communication with other educational professionals.
  12. Develops, coordinates, implements, and monitors a plan to address student attendance at the building level. Works in conjunction with the Attendance Advocate to support individual students.
  13. Working with the school recognition committee and/or school administration, organizes and coordinates various student recognitions programs.
  14. Adheres to laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the profession.
  15. Participates in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills. 42 EILA hours must be earned every two years.
  16. Performs, as appropriate, school management duties (i.e. - bus/cafeteria duties, etc.)
  17. Supervises school counseling interns and/or social work practicum students based upon current certification.
  18. Other duties as assigned by the Principal.

SALARY: Salary is based on Rank and Experience according to the JCS Certified Salary Schedule. Extra Duty stipends may also be awarded for extended days, extra duties, etc.
