Behavioral Health Specialist II - Intensive Case Management

Job Summary This is an exciting opportunity to work in a collaborative environment providing services to adults with serious mental illness and co-occurring disorders. The Intensive Case Management (ICM) Team offers comprehensive services including community intensive case management, crisis intervention, stabilization, and assistance with entitlements and basic needs. The team consists of nurses, psychiatric providers, senior clinicians, supervisors, and behavioral health specialists, delivering engagement and treatment across community settings such as homes, shelters, employment sites, jails, and hospitals. Recovery-focused practice emphasizes advocacy, empowerment, and partnership. Schedule and Location Work hours: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Some evening and alternative schedules may be required. Location: Northwest Center (Reston) 1850 Cameron Glen Drive, Suite 600, Reston, VA 20190. Benefits Competitive salary and benefits package. Illustrative Duties Makes behavioral health diagnoses using Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, International Classification of Diseases, or other diagnostic tools as required. Maintains a diverse caseload of clients with substance use, developmental disabilities, and/or mental illnesses. Develops client and/or family centered therapeutic treatment plans. Implements therapeutic treatment plans under clinical supervision. Conducts independent behavioral health intakes and assessments. Provides individual, group, and/or family treatment under supervision. Collaborates with service professionals inside and outside the Community Services Board. Adapts and modifies treatment interventions as indicated. Provides case management, outreach and engagement services as needed. Conducts wellness and health promotion services. Maintains all electronic health records per regulations, ensuring accuracy and completeness. Advocates on behalf of clients regarding rights and needed services. Develops and maintains cooperative relationships with community groups and agencies. Assesses and monitors medication impact and consults with medical professionals. Administers medication per physician orders. Provides crisis stabilization and management with support as needed. Provides ongoing risk assessments for danger to self and others. Provides entry, navigation and/or referral services. Prepares and administers behavioral health educational curricula. Testifies in court regarding clients' services, progress, and recommendations as required. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of principles, theories, and methods of behavioral health services. Knowledge of evidence-based treatment methods. Knowledge of psychological, physiological, and psychiatric terminology, theories, and practices. Knowledge of assessment processes, methods of gathering social history, and interviewing techniques. Knowledge of existing public and private agencies and community resources. Ability to formulate diagnoses and treatment plans. Ability to perform behavioral health and risk assessments and apply evidence-based/informed treatment approaches. Ability to manage a caseload. Ability to establish rapport and maintain effective relationships with clients. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, agencies, community groups, and the public. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Ability to maintain records and prepare reports. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, nursing, counseling, or a related field plus 1,500 hours of clinical experience; OR a bachelor's degree and a valid QMHP or CSAC certification plus 1,500 hours of clinical experience; OR a master's degree in a related field plus 500 hours of clinical experience. Certificates and Licenses Required Valid motor vehicle driver's license with fewer than six demerit points (or equivalent) at appointment. MANDT certifications within three months of appointment and annually thereafter. First Aid and CPR certification within 90 days of appointment. Qualified Mental Health Case Manager (QMHCM) within 1 month of appointment. Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) or Trainee (QMHP-T) within 1 month of appointment. Necessary Special Requirements Completion of a criminal background check, Child Protective Services Registry check, driving record check, and sanction screening; TB screening upon hire and annually thereafter. Willingness to adjust shift schedule to address client crises, appointments, and meetings as assigned. Licensed providers may not opt out of Medicare provider status. Preferred Qualifications Experience working with adults with Serious Mental Illness, Co-Occurring Disorders, and a history of homelessness. At least one year of experience providing community mental health services in homes, shelters, hospitals, jails, and other settings. Experience with community-based resources and treatment services and ability to collaborate with agencies. Experience with Housing First and Permanent Supported Housing models. Physical Requirements Ability to drive and travel to various locations, including some travel within Virginia. Ability to attend offsite meetings and trainings. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, observe, process, and document clinical information. Ability to use keyboard-driven equipment to access, input, and retrieve computer data. Ability to walk significant distances within and between buildings, climb stairs, and comply with security and safety regulations. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
