Under the supervision of the Veterans Resource Center Supervisor, the Student Veterans Resource Center Assistant is responsible for serving as the point-of-contact for the Veterans Resource Center. General responsibilities include welcoming guests, answering questions, and providing leadership, support, resources and general information to students. Other tasks include participating in on/off campus outreach events and awareness seminars for faculty/staff/students.

Job duties include:

• Serving as an informal peer mentor with students both in and outside the Veterans Resource Center
• Helping to create and develop events and services to better serve the student veteran community
• Assisting Veterans Resource Center Coordinator in facilitating presentations to classes and departments about Veteran awareness related topics
• Promoting Veteran Resource Center resources, events, and services through outreach and tabling on and off campus
• Answering questions and supplying information relative to the events and services the Veterans Resource Center provides
• Developing and supporting partnerships and professional working relationships with USU staff, student volunteers, university departments, faculty and clubs and organizations
• Assisting in planning, promoting, and executing all Veterans Resource Center events
• Providing excellent customer service by greeting guests and creating a welcoming environment in the Veterans Resource Center
• Maintaining front desk and the Veterans Resource Center facility in a clean and orderly fashion
• Conducting customer and building counts
• Working with established computer programs including but not limited to Word, Excel, Outlook
• Performing a variety of general office tasks including typing, filing, answering phones, photocopying, faxing, etc.
• Attending bi-weekly staff meetings and one-on-one meetings with supervisor
• Performing other related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Education:

Must be a currently enrolled CSUN student

Experience:

Previous related experience and/or specialized education required. Student Veterans and/or experience working with student Veterans strongly preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Proven leadership and organizational skills

Ability to serve as a resource and role model to peers

Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel

Must be detailed oriented, self-motivated, and possess strong initiative

Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing

Ability to objectively evaluate own performance and make appropriate changes as required

Ability to effectively coordinate multiple tasks and adhere to deadlines

Ability to make independent decisions and make recommendations

Ability to adhere to work rules, follow directions, use time effectively and work productively without close supervision

Ability to work in a culturally diverse, ethnically pluralistic environment

Customer service including the establishment and maintenance of cooperative relationships with coworkers and guests

Supervision:

Supervision is provided by the Veterans Resource Center Supervisor

Typical working conditions:

Work is primarily performed in a temperature-controlled office environment, as well as outdoors in varying weather conditions. Daily contact with members of the campus community, including students, faculty, staff, administrators and guests, is required. In addition to regularly assigned work schedule Monday-Friday, must possess an ability and willingness to work some weekends, academic interim, and break periods as needed; must be flexible, adaptable, and readily able to adjust to changes in work environment.
