Electrical I/C Technician - Power Plant

Overview Applying an expert level of skill, the Electrical, Instrumentation/Controls Technician installs, troubleshoots, calibrates, repairs, modifies, overhauls, diagnoses, tests and maintains all power plant and auxiliary equipment, to include power distribution systems, pumps, motors, programmable logic controllers (PLC) and the Distributed Control Systems (DCS). Provides environmental and safety stewardship. Ensures compliance with all applicable Federal and State regulations and plant procedures. Maintains all equipment in optimum operating condition. Develops procedures for plant and equipment monitoring systems to ensure consistent and environmentally compliant operations. Responsibilities Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: Responsible for troubleshooting all field instrumentation and control systems equipment failures. Provides services including but are not limited to problem resolution, calibration and tuning of field instrumentation and control systems. Troubleshoots, repairs, calibrates and maintains all electrical pumps, motors, relays and I/C equipment as required to support plant operations and optimize equipment value. Uses computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to maintain and control work order system and spare parts inventory. Trains and develops lesser qualified employees in performing preventive maintenance and routine equipment service activities. Practices environmental and safety stewardship. Assists in equipment or system problem identification and recommends solutions. As needed, develops maintenance procedures for electrical and I/C equipment to ensure consistent and safe operation. Adherence to all Safety, Environmental and Plant procedures. Assists in requisitioning parts and supplies. Performs other duties, including non-core responsibilities as directed. Regular and reliable attendance required. Other Duties/Responsibilities Participates in regular safety meetings. Performs housekeeping activities as required. A two-year technical degree in Electrical / Technology may be considered in lieu of experience only. Three years of working in a power plant or experience working in a heavy industrial or continuous process environment preferred. Technical training / certificates in an Electrical / Technology Industrial field or equivalent preferred. Candidate must pass the applicable EEI TECH test to be considered. High School diploma or GED required. Experience with industrial electrical systems, including low, medium, and high-voltage switchgear, protective relays, and motor controls. Certification/Licensure N/A Knowledge of Power plant electrical, instrumentation and controls equipment, systems, and drawings. Emerson Ovation, Foxboro, or ABB. DCS field in areas such as configuration, HMI graphic development and troubleshooting. 13,800V, 4,160V, and 480V electrical generation, distribution and motor controls. Safe maintenance procedures / practices. Safety, health and environmental hazards associated with the production of electricity. Steam power plant operations and maintenance including mechanical maintenance, instrument and electrical systems, and a working knowledge of the steam cycle and auxiliary systems. Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Skills, abilities and physical requirements Willingness and ability to work overtime or on alternate shifts during planned or unscheduled outages. Ability to work alternating shifts following operational crews and provide technical assistance for 3-month blocks. Ability to clearly communicate with co-workers, supervisors, and others. Ability to read and understand blueprints, wiring diagrams, and maintenance procedures. Ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS). Physical Requirements: Standing, walking, and climbing: Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods across uneven surfaces, grated walkways, and metal platforms. Frequent climbing of stairs and vertical ladders (up to 100 feet) to access elevated work areas such as boiler structures and cooling towers. Work at heights, including on scaffolding, catwalks, and aerial lifts. Lifting, carrying, and manual dexterity: Lift, carry, and maneuver tools, equipment, and materials weighing up to 50 lbs. frequently and occasionally up to 75 lbs. Use hand tools, power tools, and precision calibration equipment with fine motor control. Perform grasping, reaching, and fine motor movements. Bending, kneeling, and confined spaces: Work in tight or restricted spaces such as control cabinets, cable trays, and manholes. Perform tasks that require bending, kneeling, crouching, and crawling in confined areas. Work while lying on back or side to access equipment in difficult locations. Environmental exposure: Work in extreme temperatures, ranging from sub‑freezing conditions to excessive heat near boilers, turbines, and steam lines. Exposure to coal dust, ash, grease, fumes, and high‑noise environments requiring proper PPE. Work in areas with potential exposure to electrical hazards, rotating machinery, high‑pressure steam, and chemicals. Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including: Respirators (full‑face and half‑mask, including fit testing and medical clearance). Hearing protection in high‑noise areas. Arc flash protective gear when working with high‑voltage equipment. Flame‑resistant (FR) clothing, gloves, and safety glasses. Shift work and emergency response: Must be able to work rotating shifts, overtime, weekends, and extended hours, particularly during outages and emergencies. Respond quickly to plant alarms and emergencies, which may require quick response, climbing, or rapidly donning protective gear. While performing the duties of this position, the employee: Will work confined space and will be exposed to elements. Will work at heights. Will encounter noise levels that will necessitate the wearing of hearing protection. Compensation and Benefits At Prairie State, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as one grows and develops within a role. The base pay range we reasonably expect to pay for this role is between $39.97 per hour and $50.65 per hour. Individual pay decisions depend on various factors, such as skills, qualifications, and relevant experience. In addition, this position is eligible to participate in the Company’s monthly incentive program.
