Interpreter PD

SUMMARY Under general supervision of the Manager Interpreter Services & Information Desk or designee, and in accordance with established policies and procedures, the Medical Interpreter provides both oral and written foreign language interpretation services to non-English speaking patients and employees. The role also includes explaining hospital policies and procedures and providing assistance to patients who have limited English proficiency. Sign Language Interpreters are also provided for Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients and their families. Language requirement: Fluency in Arabic is required. RESPONSIBILITIES Provide oral and written foreign language interpretation services to non-English speaking patients and staff; provide Sign Language interpretation for Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients. Interpret questions, responses, and instructions between medical providers, staff, patients, and families, including technical terms, both in person and by telephone. Interview patients to complete required forms and schedule appointments by telephone or physical escort when medically necessary. Assist hospital personnel by explaining billing system, community free service, HMO and third‑party procedures, and help patients complete paperwork. Interpret cultural beliefs of non-English speaking patients and provide cultural competency training to hospital personnel. Communicate with outside institutions and agencies on behalf of patients and staff, including hospitals, clinics, and overseas doctors. Provide training to student interpreters, serve as a liaison for the interpreter program, and support student interpreter development. Translate medical documents and information for staff, patients, and families; maintain documentation logs, records, and statistical data. Maintain quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control in accordance with department policies, procedures, and objectives. Perform other related duties as required, such as answering the telephone or entering data into the computer. QUALIFICATIONS Associate degree in a science or human services related field, or equivalent experience. Fluency and proficiency in both English and Arabic; ability to accurately interpret and translate verbal and written content. Medical Interpreter Training Program Certificate and proficiency in medical terminology in both languages. Minimum of one to two years formal medical interpreting experience. Strong interpersonal and communication skills to handle emotionally charged situations. Ability to interview, assess, and train student interpreters and act as liaison for interpreter education programs. For sign language interpreters, appropriate certification or license. WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Work in a normal office environment with significant exposure to patient care areas. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY None. PAY RANGE $28.25 per hour.
