School Bus Driver

Drive a school bus to transport students safely and efficiently to assigned locations along designated routes.

Interested parties must:

• Obtain a Department of Transportation Physical (Cost reimbursed by Frontier School Corporation)
• Enroll and successfully complete 4 day Pre-Service Class through the Indiana Department of Education
• Obtain a Blue Card
• Successfully pass a Physical Fitness Test
• Complete four (4) hours of observation with a school bus driver holding a yellow card
• Complete eight (8) hours of driving with a school bus driver holding a yellow card
• Pass the written test for CDL at Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV)
• Pass the Skills Test at Department of Transportation testing site.

Essential Functions:

• Pick up and discharge students in accordance with established time lines; observe legal and defensive driving practices in all weather elements and road conditions.
• Maintain order and discipline among passengers on the bus; report behavior issues to appropriate personnel and assure student understanding of bus rules.
• Conduct required daily safety inspections of buses; inspect interior, exterior and engine of buses to assure safe operational condition; report mechanical malfunctions or other problems as needed.
• Collaborate with departmental supervisor or administrator in establishing and maintaining student bus stops and transportation schedules.
• Maintain and update routes sheets; contact parents or guardians to establish route pick-up or delivery times as assigned; notify appropriate supervisor of changes in routes.
• Maintain buses in a clean and safe operating condition.
• Load and unload students as required; utilize and assist students with wheelchair lifts as needed.
• Operate a two-way radio to communicate with Superintendent Office personnel.
• Perform related duties as assigned by the Administrator to meet the particular needs of the building/unit.

Qualifications:

• Any combination equivalent to:
• Graduation from high school and sufficient training and experience to perform assigned duties.
• Incumbents must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) issued by the state of Indiana.
• Candidates and employees meet State Department of Transportation physical requirements.
• Candidates must abstain from narcotic drug use and excessive drinking.
• Candidates must have sufficient physical and mental abilities to operate a school bus in a safe manner.
