Position Description

Performs basic design work and calculations. Performs field work; uses automated systems. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details. Essential Duties: Transportation Engineer Tech I: - Performs basic design work. - Performs intermediate drafting and calculations in support of design activities; accomplishes non-routine and complex assignments. - Prepares field notes. - Prepares quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies and right-of-way maps. - Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans. - Uses automated programs, interactive graphics and the Design and Construction Information System. - Works on reproduction of plans. - Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Transportation Engineer Tech II - all of the above and: - Assists in on-the-job training of less experienced technicians. - Performs advanced drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features. - Performs intermediate design work. - Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications. - Writes general notes, specifications and provisions.

Minimum Qualifications

Education : High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies. Experience : Transportation Engineer Tech I: No experience required. Transportation Engineer Tech II: 2 YEARS Drafting, design, plan preparation. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related College education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications Licenses and Certifications : Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Competencies: Transportation Engineer Tech I: - Higher mathematics - Building construction and contractor field procedures - Performing basic design and drafting - Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems - Follow verbal and written instructions Transportation Engineer Tech II - all of the above and: - Intermediate design and hand and computer-aided drafting procedures - Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities - Interactive graphic and design information systems - Writing and revising standards and procedures - Advanced and specialized design/drafting procedures - Performing advanced drafting
