The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or who have behavioral problems. The centers provide campus‑based direct services and supports at 13 centers located throughout the state. Learn About Our State Supported Living Centers. This position is available for Morning, Evening and Night shifts on multiple homes. It may be eligible to earn additional pay for work performed on evenings, nights and/or weekends. It may also be eligible to earn additional pay for work performed on maximum security locations. The Direct Support Professional (DSP) III works as part of a team that helps people with intellectual disabilities achieve their goals. Responsibilities can include routine and emergency care, treatment, and training for people with intellectual disabilities in various settings. Duties include grooming, bathing, feeding, lifting and positioning, assisting with medication administration, observing and reporting individuals’ conditions and behaviors, providing meaningful interactions, and participating in individualized training and/or active treatment programs for both males and females. The DSP documents information on the person’s life—daily events, responses to activities, training, and incidents. Work requires simple and routine duties, with decision‑making based on guidance from supervisors and professional staff. The DSP may provide training and mentorship to new DSPs and volunteer as a shift/team lead when the DSP IV Lead/Charge is absent. This position may require driving a state‑owned vehicle. Essential Job Functions (EJFs) Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned. Performs direct care and support services: habilitation and rehabilitation, behavior management, crisis intervention, mealtime plans, and treatment programs aligned with the individual’s goals. Encourages participation in activities and provides ongoing engagement. Documents participation and progress for communication with staff. Utilizes active treatment to train daily living skills, supports goal achievement, and applies person‑centered activities. Implements positive behavior support plans (PBSPs), crisis intervention plans (CIPs) and skills acquisition plans (SAPs) for training new skills such as feeding, dressing, personal hygiene and independence. Enters electronic data on daily events, responses, training, and incidents. Participates in developing person‑centered treatment plans. Provides feedback to the IDT on progress toward new skills and goals. Documents issues for effective communication with supervisory staff. Attends to healthcare needs under medical supervision. Observes signs of disease, injury or medication reactions and documents observations. Administers first aid as appropriate and reports significant changes. Administers CPR in emergency interventions. Assists transport of individuals for scheduled activities and emergencies, ensuring proper information and safety. Accompanies staff and individuals as needed. Maintains a safe and sanitary environment: corrects hazards, applies infection control protocols, prevents physical and emotional harm, models respectful interactions, and follows reporting procedures for abuse, neglect, injury, falls, seizures, restraints, peer‑to‑peer episodes, and unauthorized departures. Evacuates individuals in emergencies and completes required documentation. Provides behavior intervention to protect residents from harm, manages aggression, and administers CPR when necessary. Maintains compliance with HHSC standards for competency, training, and development. Guides new DSPs and assists them with complex tasks, models proper care techniques, and may volunteer as shift/team lead when required. Other duties may include disaster response, recovery, or Continuity of Operations Plan activation, potentially requiring alternate shift patterns or locations. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) Knowledge of individual care techniques and developmental programs or ability to learn through training. English language proficiency: read, write, talk. Clear and concise communication, good judgment in critical incidents. Quick, calm emergency reaction. Proper body mechanics, posture, lifting techniques. Ability to provide care, administer first aid/CPR, perform Ukeru once trained, and conduct Safe Use of Restraint (SUR). Mentoring and coaching of others. Effective teamwork and collaboration. Mastery of basic care and training techniques. Flexibility in handling assignments. Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications Valid Texas driver’s license (or ability to obtain within 90 days after hire) is preferred. Out‑of‑state license holders must provide a certified driving record. Certification in CPR, First Aid, Ukeru, and/or Safe Use of Restraint (SUR) is preferred. Initial Screening Criteria Required High School diploma, GED, or 6 months of work experience. Preferred Six months of experience with people who have mental health/intellectual developmental disabilities. Experience as a DSP. Experience implementing behavior programs for persons with intellectual developmental disabilities. Experience writing reports. Additional Information Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks including CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, and HHS List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Males aged 18–25 must register with Selective Service. All State Supported Living Center Employees are subject to random drug testing. Flexibility in work hours may be required, including overtime and extended hours. Availability to work weekends and holidays is necessary. All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state‑operated facility.
