Engineering Technician III – Construction Materials Testing
A well-established geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing firm is seeking an experienced Engineering Technician III – Construction Materials Testing to join its growing field operations team in Glenwood Springs, CO.
This is a hands-on, field-based position supporting construction materials testing, soils and earthwork observations, concrete testing, and quality assurance activities across a variety of commercial, residential, infrastructure, and other construction projects.
The ideal candidate brings a strong background in construction materials testing (CMT), soil compaction testing, earthwork observation, and/or concrete field testing, along with the ability to work independently, communicate effectively with contractors and project managers, and accurately document field observations and testing results.
We're particularly interested in candidates with experience using nuclear density gauges, ACI concrete testing certifications, and practical knowledge of soils and earthwork operations.
While the primary focus is on experienced Engineering Technicians, candidates with a strong construction, excavation, or earthwork background who have transferable technical skills and the ability to quickly learn materials testing procedures may also be considered.
This position supports multiple construction projects throughout the Glenwood Springs region, generally within approximately 50 miles of the office. Rather than working on one long-term construction site, technicians will have the opportunity to support a variety of projects and work alongside an experienced team of engineering and construction professionals.
What You'll Do
- Perform field observations, construction materials testing, and quality assurance inspections on active construction projects
- Conduct soils and earthwork testing, including soil compaction and in-place density testing
- Operate nuclear density gauges for soil density and moisture testing following required training, certification, and safety procedures
- Perform concrete field testing, sampling, and inspections in accordance with applicable testing standards
- Observe earthwork, excavation, fill placement, compaction, and other construction activities to verify compliance with project specifications
- Review and interpret construction drawings, geotechnical reports, project specifications, and testing requirements
- Perform field testing and inspections according to established ASTM, ACI, and other applicable industry standards
- Observe drilling activities and assist with collecting soil and other construction material samples
- Collect, label, transport, and document samples for laboratory testing and evaluation
- Prepare accurate daily field reports documenting construction activities, observations, test results, and relevant project conditions
- Communicate field findings, testing results, and potential concerns to project managers, contractors, and other project personnel
- Coordinate with construction crews, site supervisors, engineers, and project managers to support efficient project execution
- Troubleshoot routine field testing challenges and escalate technical concerns when necessary
- Maintain, inspect, clean, and calibrate field testing equipment as required
- Travel between multiple construction project sites throughout the region based on daily assignments
- Follow established safety procedures, project requirements, and proper use of personal protective equipment
- Support laboratory testing, additional inspections, and other field activities as needed
- Maintain strong standards for accuracy, professionalism, safety, and customer service
What You Bring
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Approximately 4 years of relevant construction materials testing, field inspection, construction observation, or closely related experience preferred for the Engineering Technician III level
- Hands-on knowledge of soils, earthwork, construction materials, and/or field testing procedures
- Experience with soil compaction, earthwork operations, or concrete testing
- Ability to conduct field observations and testing accurately while following established procedures and specifications
- Strong understanding of construction site operations, testing requirements, and general construction practices
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and technical documentation
- Strong communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with contractors, engineers, project managers, and other field personnel
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple job site assignments, and maintain accurate daily documentation
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to recognize potential construction or materials-related issues
- Reliable attendance, good organizational skills, and a professional, team-oriented approach
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
- Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including rain, snow, heat, and cold
- Ability to navigate active construction sites, uneven terrain, and physically demanding field environments
- Ability to lift and carry up to 65 pounds when necessary
- Flexibility to work occasional evenings, weekends, or additional hours based on project requirements
Preferred Qualifications
- ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician certification
- Experience operating nuclear density gauges for soil compaction and moisture testing
- Nuclear gauge safety training or certification
- ICC certifications related to reinforcing steel, masonry, or other applicable construction inspection disciplines
- Experience with geotechnical field observations and earthwork inspections

- Experience working for a geotechnical engineering firm, materials testing laboratory, or construction inspection organization
- Background in excavation, grading, site development, or earthwork construction
- Familiarity with ASTM testing procedures and construction quality control standards
- Experience collecting samples, maintaining testing equipment, and preparing electronic field reports
- Experience assisting with laboratory materials testing
- Associate's or bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Technology, Geology, or a related technical discipline is a plus, but not required
- Additional applicable testing and inspection certifications are valued
Why This Opportunity
- Competitive $25.00–$30.00/hour compensation based on experience and certifications, with additional flexibility for highly qualified candidates
- Paid overtime opportunities based on project needs
- Full-time employment with an established geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing organization
- Work on a variety of construction projects throughout the Glenwood Springs region
