Reading and Math Tutor

The Guatemalan Maya Center needs reading and math tutors for children from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade in our Escuelita Maya Pre-K and after-school care centers. Tutoring is conducted in English, so tutors do not need to speak Spanish. Children are from low-income immigrant families. We ask that you volunteer 1-4 hours per week. Tutors must be at least 18 years old.

Tutoring is conducted between 3:30 and 5:30 pm on Mondays through Fridays for our after-school children and tutoring is conducted on weekday mornings for our Pre-K children. Children are at two locations in Lake Worth near the 6th and 10th Ave exits of I-95. Most of the children we tutor were born in the U.S. and speak a Mayan language, Spanish, and English and benefit from tutoring conducted in English. Many of our children fall behind in reading and math due to subtle language and culture issues that one-on-one tutoring can help overcome. This is a tutoring opportunity with grateful students and parents where volunteer tutors can observe their students mature and improve academically.
