About Coefficient Giving Coefficient Giving (formerly Open Philanthropy) is a philanthropic funder and advisor. Since 2014, we’ve directed grants as part of our mission to help others with the resources available to us. Our current funds include Science and Global Health R&D, Navigating Transformative AI, Biosecurity & Pandemic Preparedness, Abundance & Growth, Farm Animal Welfare, and more. About the team Coefficient Giving’s Global Catastrophic Risks (GCR) division houses teams working on Navigating Transformative AI and Biosecurity & Pandemic Preparedness. The GCR team expects to move about $1 billion in grants in 2026, with growth expected. A core premise is that preventing a global catastrophe caused by transformative AI or biotechnology is a responsibility when funding can help. Right now, our biggest constraint is people, not funding. On average, each grantmaker on the team is responsible for more than $10 million/year in high-impact allocations, with some handling far more in their first year. New grantmakers can have substantial impact by helping to create organizations and sub-fields that wouldn’t exist otherwise, driving priority special projects, and helping high-impact organizations scale ambitiously. Timelines to transformative AI appear to shorten, and the work funded today will shape humanity’s navigation of the coming decade. We’ve launched an internal project to operate with more speed and urgency, to increase the impact of each new hire. We’re hiring for multiple roles across several teams. Common features across roles There is significant overlap in responsibilities and skills across the grantmaking teams and the GCR executive team. This section describes responsibilities applicable to all teams, with specifics described in dedicated sections below. Across all teams, grantmakers might: Identify and implement the most important projects and organizations that need to exist, proactively shaping initiatives rather than waiting for proposals to come in. Investigate grant opportunities, assessing whether a project should be funded and at what level. Own special projects beyond grantmaking, such as incubating initiatives or partnering with for-profit entities to achieve outcomes. Design, implement, and advertise new grantmaking initiatives, exemplified by launching incubators to develop leaders in critical fields. Conduct research to inform program strategy and evaluate cost-effectiveness of grants. Build and maintain relationships in the field, ensuring feedback flows between grantees, stakeholders, and the organization. We have senior generalist openings (Chief of Staff, AI Governance & Policy and Program Officer, GCR Executive Team) with responsibilities described in the sections below. These are not grantmaking roles, but aim to amplify the impact of the teams. We expect to hire at four levels: Senior Program Associates; Associate Program Officers; Program Officers; Senior Program Officers. You might be a good fit if you: Have familiarity with the global catastrophic risks ecosystem and are motivated to work on AI and/or biotechnology risks (technical expertise not required). Demonstrate ownership and agency over projects, driving progress even when tasks are challenging. Show ambition and speed in delivering impact, with strong social awareness, critical thinking, and good judgment. Communicate clearly in writing and in person, with transparent reasoning. We expect all staff to put the mission first, model operating values of ownership, openness, calibration, and inclusiveness. AI Governance & Policy The AI Governance & Policy (AIGP) team funds work to shape norms, policies, laws, and institutions governing AI development and deployment. The team moved substantial funding in 2025 and covers governance research, policy and practice, and related areas across U.S. and international policy, field-building, strategic research, and governance technology. AIGP grantmaking often involves understanding policy institutions and political dynamics. While generalists are welcome, the team especially values candidates with: Policy experience (government or think tank; U.S. policy experience valued). A technical background relevant to AI safety (e.g., information security or frontier AI hardware). Experience working on AI governance or policy at a frontier AI company. U.S. policy specialist grantmakers We are hiring one or more grantmakers focused on U.S. policy. Preference for candidates based in Washington, D.C. Profiles include: A technical AI governance specialist bridging AI capabilities and D.C. policymaking. A coalition-building expert in AI policy and cross-partisan support building. A political and campaign strategist with advocacy funding experience. China specialist We are hiring a China specialist to facilitate Chinese contributions to AI safety and cooperation between China and the West, including through forums like the International Dialogues on AI Safety. Mandarin fluency and China studies background preferred. AI information security specialist We are hiring an AI information security grantmaker. Work includes safeguarding model weights, preventing sabotage, securing data and compute resources, and ensuring high security standards for governance-enabled techniques. This portfolio spans technical research, policy development, field-building, and ecosystem support. Past grants include security centers and benchmarks. Chief of Staff We are hiring a Chief of Staff to work closely with the leaders, provide strategic recommendations, and design organizational infrastructure for the growing AIGP team. This is a senior generalist role, not a grantmaking role. Responsibilities may include: Serving as a force multiplier, advising on critical decisions and owning portfolio segments. Project managing large initiatives and coordinating stakeholders. Shaping AIGP strategy and structure, identifying priority areas. Reviewing processes to accelerate grantmaking and raise impact. Designing and leading hiring rounds, from JD creation to final decision. Managing grantmakers and staff at various levels. We are open to a wide range of experience levels; there is no location requirement for this role. AIGP is open to remote hires and does not have a strong location preference unless indicated, though proximity to Washington, D.C. or San Francisco can help for policy work. Short Timelines Special Projects The Short Timelines Special Projects (STSP) team drives forward new projects likely to be important if AI timelines are short. The remit is broad and includes grantmaking, research, incubation, coordination, headhunting, and working with for-profit entities. The STSP team seeks candidates with: Openness to diverse projects rather than deep specialization. Broad understanding of AI strategy and futurism. Excitement for launching new projects in semi-unscoped spaces. The STSP team prefers candidates based in the San Francisco Bay Area but will consider other locations and relocation support. GCR Capacity Building The GCR Capacity Building (GCRCB) team grows and strengthens researchers and practitioners focusing on Navigating Transformative AI and the broader ecosystem for global catastrophic risks. The team emphasizes infrastructure and pipelines to attract talent and support grantees; its work is well-suited to a generalist mindset. GCRCB seeks candidates with direct experience in GCR-related fields and is open to remote hires. Biosecurity and Pandemic Preparedness The Biosecurity and Pandemic Preparedness (BPP) team funds work to reduce catastrophic biological risks, including AI-enabled bio risks, prevention, response, and field-building. BPP seeks candidates with interest at the intersection of AI and biology or biosecurity. BPP prefers hires to be in-person in Washington, D.C., with remote work possible and travel as needed. GCR Executive Team The GCR executive team, led by two senior leaders, sets strategy and oversees the division. This is a senior generalist role, not a grantmaking role, with responsibilities tailored to experience. Junior responsibilities include supporting meetings, memo writing, process acceleration, and exploring AI-enabled automation; senior responsibilities include pivots, division strategy, and leadership of teams. Candidate level (Associate Program Officer, Program Officer, or Senior Program Officer) will depend on experience. There is no hard location requirement, but preferred locations include Washington, D.C., London, or the San Francisco Bay Area, with travel to these locations as needed. Role details & benefits Compensation: Baseline compensation varies by level and location, with 15% of salary paid as a 401k grant up to 24,500. Sample ranges include: Senior Program Associate: 151,800 – 189,000 Associate Program Officer: 204,500 – 254,000 Program Officer: 225,000 – 280,000 Senior Program Officer: 257,000 – 319,500 Chief of Staff (AIGP): 231,000 – 280,000 All compensation distributed as take-home salary for international hires. Time zones and location: Remote work in many countries; hires outside the U.S. considered. U.S. work authorization sponsorship considered where eligible.
