Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport (Major sports). The head coach must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and, at the same time, must continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field. The head coach must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through his/her instructions and actions. Reports To The athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals. Supervises In several instances, the head coach must advise, coordinate and support a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal. Job Goal To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. At the same time, the coach must instruct and demonstrate behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self discipline, self confidence, and pride of accomplishment in the student athletes. To upgrade his/her knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, consultation, etc. General The success of athletic programs has a strong influence on the community's image of the entire system. The public exposure is a considerable responsibility and community/parent pressure for winning performance is taxing, but must not override the objectives of good sportsmanship and good mental health. The position includes other unusual aspect such as extended time, risk injury factor and due process predicaments. It is the express intent of this job description to give sufficient guidance to function. In cases not specifically covered, it shall be assumed that a coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment. Duties and Responsibilities Has a thorough knowledge of all the athletic policies approved by the Plainwell Community Schools' Board of Education and is responsible for their implementation by the entire staff of the sports program. Has knowledge of existing system, state and league regulations; implements same consistently and interprets them for staff. Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through proper channels. Is aware of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance. Essential Functions – History Curriculum Develops and administers History curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives. Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences to develop unit organization around historical problems. Teaches knowledge of world history from early to modern historic periods, incorporating into history lessons the related subjects of political science, economics, sociology, geography, and anthropology within a historical context. Promotes the formation of attitudes and skills that will enable students to analyze intelligently the world around them so that they can be constructively participating members of a free society predicated on the rule of law. Fosters an understanding of the continuity and patterns of human behavior through the ages, an understanding of humanity's major problems and approaches to their solution(s). Demonstrates the manner in which the past provides a comparative basis from which to evaluate the nature of current issues and predict courses of action for the future, with cross reference to contemporary matters of importance. Develops students' research skills, through a variety of reading and writing assignments to stimulate self-reliance in problem-solving through effective utilization of library materials. Promotes students' critical analysis of the effect media has on the flow of information and shaping of public discourse, and encourage students to seek out and compare alternative sources of information concerning the key issues of their world. Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed. Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research. Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws. Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents. Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom. Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially within grade level, and participates in faculty meetings and committees. Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records. Certification / License Mississippi State Certification as a History Teacher. Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation. Education Bachelor's from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment. Master's degree preferred.
