TITLE: Shop Mechanic DEPARTMENT: Community Services

JOB CLASSIFICATION : NON-EXEMPT

GENERAL SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Community Services performs mechanical services related to the Community Services Operation. Performs semi-skilled, skilled work in maintaining the vehicles and mechanical equipment of the SLVPOA. Carries out preventive maintenance tasks for vehicles and equipment. Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, and air-driven tools. Tests, services and repairs tractors, mowing equipment, vehicles and mechanical equipment. Inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work. Repairs brake, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, and related systems on all equipment and vehicles used in the Community Services operation.

PRINCIPLE DUTES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Common Property/Right-of-Way Maintenance

Assists the seasonal mowing operation (maintaining road and street right-of-ways and selected POA property) by maintaining mowing equipment and vehicles in good operational condition.

Insures that equipment operators are trained in the safe and correct operation of equipment

Insures equipment operators are equipped with and use all applicable safety equipment, observe applicable safety rules and procedures

Initiates purchases, maintains inventory of repair parts for vehicles and equipment. Processes and codes invoices for payment

Reports any damage to vehicles and equipment to management.

Equipment and Vehicle Maintenance

Responsible for repair and maintenance of POA vehicles, tractors, and equipment

Assists equipment operators to ensure proper preventative maintenance and inspection of vehicles and equipment prior to operation

Changes and repairs tires and tubes.

Evaluates status of mechanical equipment and vehicles, and performs needed repairs.

Conducts analyses and inspections of all equipment and vehicles to determine the most cost-effective means of maintenance, repair or replacement.

Requisitions equipment, parts, and supplies used for vehicle and mechanical system maintenance.

Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate.

Cuts and welds metal, performs minor metal fabrication work.

Maintains records, prepares reports and other specialized maintenance records of equipment and mechanical equipment.

Schedules and arranges for maintenance or repair of equipment that is beyond the technical capability of the staff

Initiates orders, receives and verifies all repair parts and supplies required to keep equipment operating properly

Maintains inventory control of all shop tools and equipment

Facility Management

Monitors fuel inventory on a daily basis and informs supervisors of usage.

Maintains the shop area, equipment shed, tools and shop equipment in a clean and safe condition.

OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

The duties and responsibilities of this position are not limited to this description and the mechanic may perform a combination of other functions when needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

(E) 1. Excellent work attendance is an essential function of this position.

(E) 2. Operates a motor vehicle in carrying out the duties of the job. Must possess a valid drives license with a good driving history

(E) 3. Requires a strong working knowledge of commercial mowing equipment, vehicle, tractor and small engine repair

(E) 4. Must be able to effectively communicate with people at all levels by verbal, writing, and listening skills

(E) 5. Must have knowledge and understanding of safety rules, regulations, and conduct as it applies to departmental equipment

(E) 6. Must be able to physically lift 50 lbs

(E) 7. Must be able to work without direct supervision with good decision-making ability

REQUIREMENTS

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand, talk or hear, walk, and use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

• The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving

mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed

to hot and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals,

and vibration.

• The noise level in the work environment is moderately loud.

WORK EXPERIENCE:

• Through knowledge in maintenance and repair of commercial lawn equipment. 
• Considerable knowledge of small gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, welding and fabricating. Good working knowledge of automotive mechanics. 
• Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to vehicle/equipment 

EDUCATION:

• High school diploma preferred
• A.S.E. certifications preferred.
• Three (3) years of related experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
