Tax Senior Manager, Core Tax Services - Corporate/ASC 740

Job Description Core Tax Services (CTS) Senior Manager – ASC740 is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex corporate tax and ASC 740 tax issues. In this role, the Senior Manager will apply knowledge to understand potential tax issues, recognize and communicate potential risks and changes in tax policy, and be involved in marketing, networking and business development within an area of expertise. The Manager may also be asked to provide written tax advice to clients. Job Duties Tax Compliance Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and ensures self and client service teams comply with all Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM). Conducts top‑level review of tax return and resolves all tax issues with client, involving specialists when appropriate. Communicates with client and Assurance about issues identified in tax accrual reviews. Plans and reviews the tax process and procedures, including budgeting, staffing, monitoring engagement process and actual time versus budget, timely billing, collection of accounts receivable, and managing out‑of‑scope activity. Manages client relationships and expectations in accordance with the project. Provides timely advice to clients. Research Identifies when research is needed, frames issues to be researched, and reports the analysis clearly and concisely. Identifies complex issues to be researched by the engagement team, provides research methodology, trains managers/staff on research skills, and ensures ASC 740 tax issues are framed for analysis. Involves firm specialists as appropriate. ASC 740 (FAS 109 & FIN 48) Tax Accruals Applies Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual regarding ASC 740. Explains and discusses components of the income tax provision and uncertain tax positions to the client and others. Communicates with Assurance to plan tax accrual reviews, including budget, scope and delivery dates. Reviews tax provisions, applies in‑depth knowledge of ASC 740, and reviews prepared workpapers. Utilizes and manages Specialized Tax Services (STS) as needed. Tax Consulting Assists with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient methods to maximize client benefits and decrease future taxes. Considers applicability of CTS and STS consulting specialties. Develops and implements a work plan, organizes STS assistance on ongoing projects, and serves as a technical resource. Ensures client service teams comply with Firm policy regarding Written Tax Advice (WTA) and provides exam support. Frames projects and issues for delegation to seniors and associates. Tax Specialization Develops in‑depth understanding of technical and practical issues in one or more areas of taxation (individual, corporate, property, sales, pass‑through, state & local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits & incentives, compensation & benefits, accounting methods, R&D tax benefits). May organize and conduct internal CPE training sessions and mentor managers/seniors/associates on ASC 740. Strategy Development Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to benefit clients, the Firm, or personnel. Consistently suggestion improvements to previous work products or approaches. Might lead marketing campaigns and present complex strategies to clients. Collaborates with the Firm’s National Tax and Specialized Tax Services to deliver high‑quality deliverables on ASC 740. Other duties as required. Supervisory Responsibilities Supervises associates and senior associates on all projects. Reviews work prepared by associates and senior associates and provides review comments. Trains associates and seniors on software tools. Acts as a career advisor to associates and senior associates. Schedules and manages workload of associates and senior associates. Provides verbal and written performance feedback. Education Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Taxation, required. Master’s degree in Accounting or Taxation, preferred. Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Taxation, required. Master’s degree in Accounting or Taxation, preferred. Experience Eight (8) or more years of prior experience, required. Experience in managing the preparation and auditing of ASC 740 computations for both privately held and publicly traded clients, required. Prior supervisory experience, required. Multinational client experience, preferred. License/Certifications CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) – or equivalent – required. Software Experience with Microsoft Office Tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat, preferred. Experience with tax research databases such as BNA and RIA; proficient in tax compliance process software including GoFileRoom, GoSystemRS, Caseware, BNA Depreciation Software, or comparable programs, preferred. Language N/A Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Superior verbal and written communication skills. Ability to effectively delegate work as needed. Strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills; decision‑making skills. Team‑work skills. Able to develop and manage a team of tax professionals. Ability to compose written tax advice. Ability to develop and maintain client relationships. Executive presence; primary client contact for preparation and presentation of issues and resolutions to clients.
