Controls Technician

Job Title Controls Technician 1 Schedule Monday–Friday 7am–4pm with rotation on call. Responsibilities New installations, programming, and upgrades of equipment used in the manufacturing of tubing and other related processes. Assist maintenance technicians with troubleshooting and provide on‑call coverage on a rotating basis. Adhere to NEC and NFPA 70 standards for electrical installations and workplace safety. Interpret and edit electrical schematics in accordance with IEC and JIC standards. Troubleshoot and install Motor Control Systems, including 24VDC and 120VAC control voltages, 480VAC to 600VDC operational voltages, and Variable Frequency Drives. Work with Connected Components Workbench software. Program and troubleshoot PLCs using the Rockwell Software Suite, including RSLogix 500 and Studio 5000. Design and modify HMIs using FactoryTalk View ME or Studio View Designer. Report directly to the Controls Supervisor. Physical Demands Requires full range of body motion including frequent lifting, bending, twisting, kneeling, pushing, pulling, stooping, squatting, reaching, and working overhead. Activities are performed for extended periods in tight or awkward positions, often at heights up to forty feet. The role requires frequent walking or standing on concrete floor for ten‑hour shifts while wearing steel‑toed shoes, and may involve walking up to two miles per shift. Tasks may include lifting objects weighing 5 to 50 pounds (average 34–37 pounds), and carrying tool pouches or backpacks weighing 18–30 pounds. Working Conditions The work environment is an indoor manufacturing facility exposed to loud and prolonged noise from machinery and overhead cranes, as well as extremely loud clanging caused by metal tubing collisions. Personal Protective Equipment such as hearing protection, safety glasses with side shields, and leather steel‑toed work shoes or boots is required. Employees work ten‑hour shifts and are exposed to hot temperatures ranging from 95°F to 110°F during summer, and occasionally to cold temperatures. Essential Duties Read and perform programming changes to wiring, ladder logic, structured text, function blocks, operator interface, and computer networking. Work with multiple programming software including RSLogix 500, RSLogix 5000, Studio Designer 5000, Studio View Designer 5000, Factory Talk View ME, and Connected Components Workbench. Configure and set up Windows networks, communication ports, and data file management systems. Collaborate with engineering on development or modification of equipment involving electrical and control systems. Read electrical schematics to troubleshoot, repair, or modify equipment wiring. Set up and operate various types of production machinery and equipment after modifications and before approving production usage, ensuring superior operating conditions and safety. Use voltages up to 600V DC and 480V AC with appropriate hand tools (drills, saws, screwdrivers, wire stripping and terminating tools). Operate forklifts, aerial lifts, and scissor lifts when required to work at elevated heights up to forty feet. Serve as a first responder to any emergency, including equipment or personnel, and be trained in CPR and First Aid. Follow OSHA Confined Space Regulations when crawling into, under, or on top of equipment and machinery such as Heat Treat Furnaces. Climb ladders to change, inspect, or install equipment or machinery. Inspect, move, and install new or existing equipment and machinery; work on major projects including complete rebuilds, design alterations, or modifications of existing equipment. Communicate with production operators to gather information about equipment failures to troubleshoot problems effectively. Collaborate with production teams on changes needed to enhance the functionality of the operator interface on equipment. Use electrical meters to identify voltages and wires during troubleshooting. Employ hand tools to access, install, or remove components for equipment modifications. Lay out, assemble, install, test, repair, and adjust electrical fixtures, apparatus, equipment, machinery, and wiring (e.g., motors, lighting fixtures, circuit breakers, transformers, programmable logic controls). Measure, cut, thread, bend, and install electrical conduit; pull wiring through conduit; splice wires; connect wiring to fixtures and power equipment; install grounding leads; and monitor the performance of installed electrical equipment for hazards, adjustments, or replacement. Work closely with the Maintenance Department when installing, reconfiguring, or removing equipment or machinery. Develop initial training for new programming, operator interface, or machine operation for the maintenance department and production managers. Fill in for other positions as needed and perform other duties as assigned. Demonstrate self‑motivation and take the initiative after receiving assignments. Requirements Education: High school education or equivalent preferred. Experience: Two years of applicable industrial maintenance, electrical, or automation experience. Proficiency with basic computer skills and programming languages including ladder logic, structured text, and function block. Ability to deal with stress and work well with co‑workers and supervisors. English reading and speaking skills preferred. High school level mathematical skills required. Must communicate effectively with supervisors and co‑workers. Regular attendance and punctuality are essential.
