This opportunity entails being responsible for leading a growing team of traffic engineers in the design, development and delivery of project tasks while managing scope, budget, and quality control. It involves coordinating project priorities, staffing schedules, and staff assignments to ensure clients are provided the proper resources at the appropriate time. It also requires technical coaching and mentoring and efficient, productive utilization of staff in providing high-quality service. What You'll Do Develop and monitor the department’s operating budget in support of the group or office operating budget and forecast updates. Manage, grow, and professionally develop a discipline‑specific engineering department; coordinate department activities, establish priorities, and assign staff to projects. Ensure staff development, mentoring and training needs are met and collaborate with other departments on work-sharing opportunities. Support the implementation of HNTB’s strategic plan and Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA) process on project pursuits in the department and office, including the development of department‑level strategic planning strategies. Assist in contracting (SCA) process during project delivery, reviewing scope, work plans and fee reviews for all contracting activities impacting the department. Support project delivery (SDA) process including work planning, monthly project reviews and other performance methods to ensure quality work, on time, on schedule, and to the client’s satisfaction. Assist in marketing responsibilities, including client discovery, proposal generation, interviews, and win‑to‑work activities. Maintain client contacts to ensure client satisfaction; lead and assist in sales and marketing efforts for department growth. Recruit, hire, develop, and retain department staff, including planning for staff reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession. Manage assigned project management activities (scope, schedule, budget, and quality) and perform technical discipline tasks including research, reports, designs, specifications and plan preparation. Lead multiple teams, supervising at least 15 but typically 17–20 or more employees. Perform other duties as assigned. What You’ll Need Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with 10 years of practical experience, including 2 years of supervisory experience. What We Prefer 12 years of practical experience 4 years of supervisory experience Professional Engineer (PE) certification in MA or RI, or the ability to obtain it within 6 months Experience with Synchro, Sidra, HCS, VISSIM What You’ll Bring Ability to provide technical advice, mentoring, and support for HNTB management and staff Experience managing overall department operations, workload, and utilization of staff Comfort interacting with clients regarding projects, technical matters and industry trends Problem‑solving aptitude on complex transportation and traffic assignments Experience delivering quality control, completeness, and accuracy in engineering reviews for deliverables Demonstrated ability to collaborate on vision and strategy for the department to identify new work, provide enhanced services, and continue growth The Right Candidate Has significant breadth and depth of technical experience in traffic analysis and transportation engineering Develops concept‑level design solutions for corridors, intersections, and interchanges Has experience coordinating with other disciplines such as Highway, Environmental, and Structural Has proficiency delivering projects for MassDOT (additional experience with RIDOT is a plus) Provides technical guidance on complex or unusual engineering projects Evaluates designs and analyses for completeness and fit Enjoys opportunities to advise and guide staff throughout design stages, including mentoring and skill growth of less experienced staff Is collaborative and works with leadership to create a vision for the department Additional Information Benefits information: HNTB Total Rewards Equal Opportunity Employer/Disability/Veteran Visa sponsorship is available for this position. Locations Boston, MA Salary Approximate pay range for Massachusetts: $180,600–$288,491. Actual compensation will depend on factors including qualifications, experience, skills, and work location.
