Anatomic Pathology Technician

Job Description Summary Serves as a Pathologist extender for the Department of Pathology. Responsible for case accessioning, gross description and sampling of small uncomplicated tissue specimens, evisceration of autopsies, preparation and collection of tissue for special studies, cutting, staining, and cover slipping of frozen section tissue, maintaining supplies of gross room/morgue, disposal of old specimens, and identifying and resolving labeling/identification discrepancies. Responsibilities and Duties Accessioning of Surgical Pathology Specimens (30%): Accurately accession all surgical pathology specimens/case types in the AP LIS with diligent specimen identification and labeling. Address all discrepancies in a timely and professional manner. Evaluation and Gross Dissection of Small Specimens (25%): Accurately complete gross evaluation of small uncomplicated surgical specimens, including description/dictation, identification, and cassetting. Assistance in Gross Room Frozen Section Preparation (15%): Assist Pathologist in evaluation and selection of tissue during frozen sections; perform tissue freezing, cutting, staining, cover slipping, and preparation of staining alcohol/air‑dried touch preps. Process special study tissue (e.g., ER/PR, Lymphoma, Chromosome analysis). Manage multiple specimens simultaneously with proper identification. Autopsy Performance (10%): Identify and prepare the body for autopsy, perform evisceration, organ removal and weighing, close body cavities, and clean autopsy suite following safety and infection control procedures. Maintenance of Gross Room (10%): Ensure instruments are sharp, workstations are stocked, machines are functional, and supplies inventory is maintained at optimum levels. Performance Miscellaneous Assigned Tasks (10%): Disposal of tissue, safety precautions, computer knowledge, file correlation, troubleshooting, and focus on safety, quality, and efficiency. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED (Required). HT (Histotechnician) Registered – American Society for Clinical Pathology. Associate degree with HT (ASCP) certification. Or five years general laboratory experience as a Technical Lab Assistant or other hospital‑based assistant (surgery, general medicine). Specialized Knowledge Highly skilled communicator and critical thinking skills. Medical terminology and basic anatomy knowledge. Strong computer skills. Work Shift Night Shift.
