Role Overview The Electrical Lead – Commissioning is responsible for planning, coordinating, supervising, and executing all electrical pre‑commissioning and commissioning activities to ensure the safe, reliable, and timely energization of electrical systems. This role oversees the commissioning of medium‑ and low‑voltage electrical systems, substations, switchgear, transformers, power distribution equipment, motor control centers, and electrical protection systems. The Electrical Lead ensures all systems are installed, tested, energized, and handed over in accordance with client specifications, industry standards, and project requirements. Key Responsibilities Ensure contractors execute electrical commissioning activities in accordance with approved commissioning procedures, Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), method statements, and testing protocol. Review electrical engineering documentation including SLDs, schematics and wiring diagrams, load lists. Develop commissioning schedules and identify manpower, tooling, and test equipment requirements. Coordinate commissioning activities with construction, QA/QC, and project controls teams. Electrical Systems Commission Lead commissioning activities for Medium Voltage (MV) and Low Voltage (LV) switchgear, power and distribution transformers, motor control centers (MCCs), UPS systems and battery banks, diesel generators, and emergency power systems. Verify installation quality and mechanical completion prior to energization. Supervise pre‑energization inspections, functional testing, and system energization. Verify correct phasing, grounding, and protection settings. Testing & Energization Plan Plan and oversee electrical testing activities, including insulation resistance (IR) testing, cable continuity and integrity testing, high voltage (HV) testing (VLF, Hi‑Pot, etc.), protection relay testing, and functional testing of control circuits and interlocks. Lead controlled system energization and switching activities. Develop switching procedures and isolation plans in accordance with site safety requirements. Protection & Control Systems Verify operation and performance of electrical protection systems, including differential protection, distance protection, and motor protection systems. Review and validate relay settings, trip circuits, and protection logic. Coordinate with the Instrumentation & Control team to ensure successful integration with SCADA, PLC, and DCS systems. Ensure Inspection and Test Records (ITRs) are completed and punch‑list items are resolved prior to energization. Participate in system walk‑downs, readiness reviews, and mechanical completion inspections. Confirm systems are ready for commissioning and manage turnover from construction to commissioning. Start‑Up & Operational Support Support plant start‑up activities, load testing, and system stabilization. Troubleshoot electrical faults and equipment issues during commissioning. Provide technical support to operations during initial plant run‑through. Submit commissioning records and test reports, energization permits, and switching plans. Review red‑line drawings and verify as‑built documentation. Ensure documentation complies with applicable client standards and industry codes including IEC, IEEE, and NFPA. Health, Safety & Environment Promote and enforce compliance with all client HSE policies and procedures, including Permit to Work (PTW) and Lock Out, Tag Out, Try Out (LOTOTO). Ensure high‑risk activities such as energization, switching operations, and high‑voltage testing are performed safely. Conduct toolbox talks, job hazard analyses, and risk assessments. Promote a strong safety culture throughout the commissioning team. Coordination & Stakeholder Management Coordinate commissioning activities with mechanical, instrumentation & control, and process commissioning teams, construction and QA/QC personnel, equipment vendors and OEM representatives, and client operations and maintenance teams. Participate in commissioning meetings, planning sessions, and progress management. Lead and supervise electrical commissioning technicians and contractors. Assign work priorities and monitor commissioning progress against schedule. Provide technical guidance, coaching, and leadership to the commissioning team. Drive accountability, quality, safety, and schedule performance. Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline preferred. Equivalent combination of technical education and a minimum of five years of relevant field experience will also be accepted. Experience: Minimum 10 years of electrical engineering or commissioning experience. At least 5 years in a lead or supervisory commissioning role. Experience on large EPC industrial, mining, oil & gas, power generation, or heavy industrial projects. Proven experience leading electrical system energization and plant start‑up activities. Strong knowledge of electrical protection systems, commissioning procedures, and applicable industry standards. Skills & Competencies Strong leadership and team management skills. Excellent troubleshooting and problem‑solving abilities. Effective communication and coordination across multidisciplinary teams. Strong planning, organizational, and decision‑making skills.
