Building Athletics Director

General Description Under the direction of the Principal and Deputy Superintendent, the Athletics Director is responsible for providing overall leadership and direction for the athletic program at the assigned high school and, in a district capacity, for ensuring alignment and articulation of athletic programs across feeder schools (middle school levels). This position has both building-level and district-level responsibilities. While direct supervision of middle school sports programs rests with building principals, the Athletics Director provides input into coaching staffing, hiring recommendations, and program alignment to ensure continuity from elementary through high school. This position may include, but is not limited to, the following performance responsibilities, qualifications, knowledge, skills, and abilities. Performance Responsibilities/Essential Functions Determine coaching needs at the assigned high school; recruit, interview, and recommend coaches for all sports. Provide input and advisory recommendations regarding coaching staffing and hiring at feeder middle schools to ensure programmatic alignment and continuity, consistent with applicable collective bargaining agreements and district hiring procedures. Support coaches and activity supervisors in the administration of sports programs; meet regularly with coaches to address concerns and resolve problems; provide orientation, observation, and evaluation of coaches; provide feedback aimed at the recruitment and retention of quality coaches. Promote and foster student participation in school athletics. Oversee a wide variety of athletics program activities; coordinate with advisors and administrators; enforce rules and regulations; work with students on a wide variety of activities. Administer athletic budgets; identify and communicate budget needs approve and track expenditures; account for purchase, use, storage and inventory of athletic equipment. Supervises and evaluates coaching staff for all athletics. Acts as the liaison between booster clubs and school administration. Serves as district-level liaison to administrators at feeder middle schools to promote program alignment, consistent athletic philosophy, and coordinated student development across the K–12 continuum; provides input into middle school athletic staffing and programming to ensure continuity with high school athletic programs, while recognizing that direct supervision of middle school athletics remains with building principals. Coordinate student athletics and related activities at the high school level; schedule events; arrange for transportation; arrange for supervision and adult coverage of school sponsored events; coordinate and plan for use of fields and facilities; schedules officials. Supervise student eligibility for athletes; interpret eligibility regulations; ensure adherence to all eligibility requirements; supervise the preparation and publishing of student eligibility. Recommend and implement changes to ensure safe practices and broad student participation in district athletics, activities, and health and fitness programs; identify and address safety concerns in compliance with applicable WIAA rules and district policy. Maintains and manages record keeping system for physicals, athletic codes and student contact information. Manages all aspects of building’s games and events (i.e., security support staff, officials, equipment set up and take down, ticket money management, tournaments, etc.). Schedules and manages transportation to away events. Manages distribution of rosters with the league. Initiates investigation of violations regarding league, District, WIAA, or building athletic code and provides a timely report to the Administrator. Manages appeals to WIAA. Meets with coaches before each season to review rules, regulations and policies of all WIAA groups (i.e., school district, league, district and state). Manages and coordinates with the Maintenance Department the upkeep and maintenance of all sports facility buildings, including fields. Is the District’s liaison to the athletic league and to the WIAA. Collaborate with the District’s Title IX Coordinator to implement and maintain compliance with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Board Policy 2152, and Procedure 2152P (Nondiscrimination on the Basis of Sex in Education Programs and Activities); ensure equitable access to athletic opportunities, facilities, and resources regardless of sex, consistent with RCW 28A.640 and WAC 392‑190. Coordinate Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying (HIB) prevention training for coaches and volunteers in compliance with RCW 28A.300.285, Board Policy 3207, and WIAA requirements; promptly report and document HIB incidents in accordance with district policy. Enforces crowd control and all rules/regulations required for a clean and safe facility operation. Ensure that all facilities are opened, set up, secure and that equipment is put away ensuring that the facility is ready for users. Coordinate stadium event schedule with the district Facility Use Coordinator. Maintains a current inventory of all equipment, materials and supplies used in operation of the facility. Report significant injuries, accidents, or unusual occurrences (including break‑ins and vandalism) during athletic facility usage to district administration; ensure incident documentation and follow‑up are consistent with district liability protocols, RCW 28A.400.370, and applicable reporting requirements; notify administration, security, and law enforcement as appropriate. Coordinates with maintenance, grounds and custodial of all athletic facilities and surrounding areas to preserve grounds in a healthy, attractive and safe condition. Prepares and monitors athletic facilities for all home athletic events and practices to provide adequate, attractive and safe areas for athletic events. Works with building administration to develop and oversee athletic facilities budget to ensure services are achieved within budget. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Education and Experience Coaching background preferred. Valid Washington State Certificate required; Administrative Certificate preferred. Must have, or obtain, Authorization to Transport Students. Bloodborne Pathogen training (provided at hire). Valid First Aid/CPR certification. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of fiscal management. Understanding of and ability to consistently implement WIAA standards. Skills in time management and organizational skills. Skills and ability to de‑escalate emotional situations with parents, public, and students and lead them to positive outcomes. Ability to work well with high school administrators, all coaches, the athletic trainer, students and staff. Ability to develop and maintain effective management strategies. Ability to develop and follow a budget. Ability to interact professionally, positively, and with appropriate confidentiality with students, fellow workers, parents, and the general public. Ability to work equitably and respectfully with individuals of diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, cognitive and physical abilities, and cultural, ethnic, racial and linguistic identities, consistent with district nondiscrimination policies and RCW 28A.642. Ability to follow SSD policies, procedures and protocols. Ability to maintain a consistent presence at assigned work location and fulfill assigned hours. #J-18808-Ljbffr
