A Brief Overview The role involves attending to the needs of an assigned group of patients and aiding licensed nursing personnel and physicians in patient care by performing various patient care activities and related non‑professional services. The staff models appropriate behavior as exemplified in the organization’s Mission, Vision, and Values. What You Will Do Assist with patient care as directed by the Charge/Registered Nurse. Initiate and reassess vital signs including pulse oximetry; document and report findings to the nurse. Effectively position patients for examinations and procedures and assist with patient transportation; ensure proper patient identification. Perform phlebotomy in a professional manner according to protocol and safety standards. After completion of the orthopedic class provided by CES, provide orthopedic services to patients according to providers’ orders; demonstrate competence in orthopedic skills such as applying and removing splints or casts. Perform additional job functions in a timely fashion and document clinical care and observations on appropriate records, including performing EKGs in accordance with policy and procedure. Demonstrate and promote the professional practice of all members of the care team. Complete mandatory and unit‑specific competency requirements. Perform other job functions as assigned or requested. Education / Formal Training Requirements Required: Technical Degree or Diploma in Emergency Medical Tech (EMT) Preferred: Technical Degree or Diploma in Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) Preferred: Technical Degree or Diploma in Paramedic Work Experience Requirements Preferred: No prior work experience Licenses and Certifications Requirements Required: Emergency Medical Personnel Tennessee – Tennessee Emergency Medical Services Division Required: Basic Life Support – American Heart Association Preferred: Basic Life Support – American Red Cross Preferred: Advanced Emergency Medical Personnel – Tennessee – Tennessee Emergency Medical Services Division Preferred: Advanced Emergency Medical Technician – Mississippi – Mississippi State Department of Health Preferred: Emergency Medical Personnel – Arkansas – Arkansas Department of Health Preferred: Paramedic – Mississippi – Mississippi State Department of Health Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Successful completion of orientation. Ability to read, write, and understand verbal or written instructions. Ability to communicate verbally with others effectively. Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times according to policy, procedure and HIPAA requirements. Demonstrates compassion and patience with a deep level of concern for patients. Must be able to communicate effectively and in a positive manner with patients, family, public, and other health‑care workers. Must be able to cope with stressful situations, including death and dying, and dealing with anguished relatives. Comply with safety/emergency procedures and nursing service policies. Ability to use equipment required for implementing patient care. Adhere to Methodist Healthcare Systems’ code of conduct. Supervision Provided by This Position There are no supervisory or lead responsibilities assigned to this position. Physical Demands The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion. Must have good balance and coordination. Physical requirements: medium work – exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently. Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform tasks such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, or extensive reading.
