About the Indiana Department of Labor (IDOL):The mission of the Indiana Department of Labor is to advance the safety, health, and prosperity of Hoosiers in the workplace. To make significant strides in achieving our mission, we emphasize both enforcement and voluntary compliance for employers. Our office administers the IOSHA program, state wage and hours, youth employment laws, and underground coal mine safety. We also have many free training and educational resources available to the public through our INSafe Division. Let us know how we can help you. Salary:The salary for this position traditionally starts at $59,800.00 but may be commensurate with education and work experience. A Day in the Life: The essential functions of this role are as follows:Conduct assigned inspections: formal and non-formal complaints, referrals, emphasis-related contact, threats of imminent danger, and fatalities and catastrophes.Inspect sites to recognize and evaluate safety and health conditions per IOSHA regulations.Hold opening conferences with company owners and/or management to advise on the inspection process and gather relevant materials.Collect, analyze, and compare data to established safety and health regulations, and document findings through notes, sketches, photographs, etc.Create and document technical reports for administrative and regulatory action.Interview employees to gather job-specific information and caution them on safety hazards.Conduct closing conferences with company owners and/or management to provide a summary of inspection findings and discuss abatement.Testify at informal hearings and before the Board of Safety Review.Essential functions of this position require travel on most workdays to inspect, audit, examine, survey, or investigate clients, customers, or other regulated entities and write reports at those sites or employee’s home. Employee reports to the agency’s office for occasional meetings or events. Number and timing of work hours may vary daily or weekly to accommodate operational needs and staffing concerns at the client’s or customer’s worksite, minimize expenditures for repeated visits to complete the work, and allocate resources to complete assigned work effectively.The job profile is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee. Other duties, responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice.What You'll Need for Success: Individuals in this role should minimally be able to articulate or demonstrate the following:Undergo an annual physical/medical evaluation to ensure physically able to carry out the essential functions of the position.Be willing to travel with reasonable accommodation.The ability to carry sometimes heavy and awkward equipment, and to move, ascend, be stationary while carrying sampling and measuring devices and wearing protective clothing, including respirators.The ability to work in unpleasant and hazardous conditions, including noise and toxic chemicals, during inspections/investigations.Broad knowledge of training techniques relating to occupational health and safety subject matters.The ability to interpret and apply IOSHA regulations, consensus standards, and various practices and precedents falling within the jurisdiction of IOSHA.The ability to conduct inspections and further investigations and to prepare administrative reports for use as basis for recommendations for further action.The ability to maintain working cooperative relationships and ability to manage difficult situations with utmost professionalism; ability to maintain confidentiality.The ability to communicate in a precise and professional manner.The ability to utilize and learn computer software such as MS Office programs and agency specific programs.A degree is not required. However, at least 8+ years of experience in a construction or an industrial environment applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role may be considered. Individuals should have the ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports: This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
