The Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS) located in Tucson AZ serves over 171,000 Veterans located in eight counties in Southern Arizona and one county in Western New Mexico. SAVAHCS is a 295-bed hospital providing primary care and sub-specialty health care in numerous medical areas for eligible Veterans. SAVAHCS also provides our Veterans with quality care at our seven Community Based Outpatient Clinics located at Safford, Casa Grande, Sierra Vista, Yuma, Green Valley, Northwest and Southeast Tucson.

RN Critical Care - RESPONSIBILITIES (listed are included but not limited to)

• Must float between the Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Department, as needed.
• Knowledge of professional care theories, principles, practices, disease processes, and procedures to perform nursing assignments of moderate difficulty and experience to acutely ill adult and geriatric patients as appropriate. Utilizes the nursing process as a basis for professional practice.
• Knowledge of a variety of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment, the desired effects, side effects, and complications of their use as well as the accurate administration of the pharmacologic agent, including dosage calculations as required.
• Knowledge of the administrative requirements for proper documentation of patient conditions including disease progress, acknowledgment of teaching, and follow-up care.
• Knowledge of a wide range of medical disorders and conditions as appropriate, as seen in critically ill patients.
• Data must be synthesized from a variety of sources and appropriate clinical decisions must be made to interpret lethal rhythms independently of a physician.
• Ensure compliance with standards of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used.
• Administer medications, wound care, and other personalized interventions.
• Direct and supervise care other healthcare professionals provide, including performing charge nurse duties as needed.
• Recognize adverse signs and symptoms and quickly react in emergency situations.
• Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with a diverse group of people for the purpose of informing the healthcare team of plans/actions, for teaching/education to benefit the patient/family and organization. Effectively uses appropriate communication format in addressing professional issues.
• Excellent written communication skills to perform accurate documentation, both written and electronic, of all activity, including telephone contacts, in accordance with requirements.
• Skill in setting up, operating, and monitoring specialized medical equipment such as invasive monitoring devices, EKG units, oxygen analyzers, nebulizers, and other unit-specific equipment.
• Performs/assists with procedures such as bladder catheterizations, administration of oxygen, EKGs phlebotomy, and other unit-specific procedures, in accordance with established protocols.

RN Critical Care - REQUIREMENTS

• Must possess a current, valid, unrestricted nursing license in a state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a Territory of the United States.
• Must have a minimum of 12 months experience in an intensive care/critical care environment during the last 36 months.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as approved by the American Heart Association (AHA) are mandatory.
• Evidence of current immunizations is required.
