Undergraduate Internship, Detention Hotline

Amica Center for Immigrant Rights works to address the impact of the unjust immigration system through direct legal representation, impactful litigation, education, and client-centered advocacy. We are the only nonprofit in Washington, D.C. dedicated to providing legal assistance to adult and child immigrants detained by the government in the Capital Region and beyond. Position Summary We are seeking four undergraduate students to support our Detention Hotline, which connects noncitizen adults held in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody to Amica staff for legal education and representation. The Interns will answer calls, conduct legal intakes, and assist with administrative tasks such as data entry, document translation, and interpreting (depending on Spanish fluency). This internship requires at least 20 hours per week during normal working hours (Mon–Fri, 9 AM–5 PM ET) for a minimum of 12 weeks, beginning around August 31, 2026. General Duties & Responsibilities 60% Detention Hotline Staff the hotline and connect callers with Amica legal staff. Deliver follow‑up messages related to individual cases. Provide information about upcoming jail visits. Enter data related to client information and interactions. Prepare for hotline shifts and share information with the Know Your Rights team. 15% Know Your Rights & Legal Education Conduct telephonic intake interviews with detained immigrants and enter data into our client database. Maintain the client database with intake or follow‑up information after jail visits. Provide ad‑hoc support to Jail Visit Teams during preparation and post‑visit documentation. 15% Translation & Interpreting Translate documents such as declarations, letters of support, birth certificates, and news articles for court submissions. Interpret calls between attorneys and clients, including declaration readbacks, hearing preparation, offers of representation, and witness interviews. 10% Additional Responsibilities Remotely observe master calendar hearings and bond hearings. Attend immigration law training opportunities. Provide filing and other administrative assistance as needed. Support other projects within the Detention Hotline, Volunteer Program, and Know Your Rights team as capacity and interest allow. Requirements Must be pursuing an undergraduate degree. Must be 18 or older. Working professional proficiency in Spanish required; fluency preferred. Customer service skills and experience communicating with diverse audiences. Comfort with technology and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Quick learner, adaptable, and proven ability to master new software. Highly organized and self‑motivated. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Required Resources Access to a laptop or computer. Reliable internet connection. A phone. Amica Center may provide a temporary laptop if needed. Scholarship Opportunity Four $1,000 tax‑free scholarships are available for eligible interns for the Fall 2026 semester. These funds are intended to cover tuition, fees, books, supplies, and equipment.
