Preconstruction Estimator (Construction/HVAC)

Job Summary Preconstruction Estimator – Willowbrook, IL. This role involves working with internal teams and customers to identify and develop turnkey HVAC contracting projects, including scope of work development, cost estimating, working with local contractors, and proposal support. Responsibilities Responsible for the cost estimates consisting of materials, sub‑contractors, purchased equipment, labor (startup, service work, etc.), and other construction-related activities to assist Account Managers in bidding or determining project price. Develops detailed scope based on Account Managers' design‑build scope or published plans and specifications for competitive bidding. Creates detailed cost estimates including system sketches, scope definition, exceptions/exclusions, preliminary proposal, vendor/sub‑contractor quotes, and points list. Collects project data needed to assemble project scope and estimate. Utilizes relevant plans, specifications, and construction industry knowledge to analyze project needs and compile detailed cost estimates. Responsible for take‑off and pricing of purchased equipment to ensure accuracy of quantity, size, configuration, voltage, options, etc. Reviews bid documents, existing conditions, and subcontractor proposals for potential conflicts and constructability issues. Hosts pre‑bid meetings with Account Managers to review scope, strategy, etc. Identifies possible cost‑saving opportunities and risk items that may occur on various projects. Optimizes job costs by negotiating prices with vendors/sub‑contractors through quotations for materials and services. Assists Account Manager with determining the need for outsourced engineering involvement and works with Operations / Fulfillment to improve and control cost variations in labor, material, and electrical subcontract through pre‑bid validation and post‑mortems. Provides key technical support in pursuit of Trane business, including participation on strategic job acquisition teams. Supports all efforts of acquisition and customer satisfaction. Qualifications Four‑year degree in Engineering or Construction Management or equivalent experience. Project Management and/or HVACR related work experience required. Experience with construction estimating, project bidding, and/or procurement. Working knowledge of all facets of construction including mechanical, electrical, plumbing systems and HVAC operation, electrical systems, and temperature controls. Understanding of construction methods/practices and ability to communicate with and direct subcontractors to obtain critical proposal information. Flexibility to work outside normal hours, weekends, including occasional travel with overnight stays. Must possess a valid driver’s license for a minimum of 12 months, with no major or frequent traffic violations such as DUI, hit‑and‑run, license suspension, reckless driving, or multiple infractions in the past three years. Compensation Annual Base Salary Range: $70,400.00 – $128,379.99. Salary incentive eligible: Yes. Commission eligible: No. Benefits Health insurance and holistic wellness programs starting day one.
