Fiber Technician / Technician II Structured Cabling
This role is responsible for installing, terminating, testing, and splicing fiber and copper cabling in a structured cabling environment. You will build and equip telecommunications closets, install work area outlets, perform fiber and copper testing and troubleshooting, and ensure all work meets industry quality and safety standards. The position also involves supporting project timelines, coordinating with team members, and contributing to the successful delivery of a multiyear infrastructure project.
Responsibilities
- Install, terminate, test, and splice fiber optic cabling for a variety of applications.
- Install work area outlets for floor and wall locations, including terminating CAT 3 and CAT 5 jacks and correctly mounting faceplates and surface-mount boxes.
- Build and equip telecommunications closets by mounting and installing backboards, cross-connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optic components, and related hardware.
- Install grounding for racks, equipment, and cabling as required to meet safety and performance standards.
- Complete all IDC connections, including terminating 110 and 66 blocks and patch panels.
- Perform continuity testing of horizontal and riser cabling using appropriate test equipment, including volt-ohmmeters.
- Troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts, and transposed pairs on horizontal and riser cabling and resolve issues efficiently.
- Identify active voice and data circuits and ensure proper labeling and documentation as needed.
- Test fiber using an OTDR, interpret results, and troubleshoot issues end to end and across the network to identify and correct problems.
- Perform mechanical splicing on all types of fiber cable to ensure reliable connections.
- Perform fusion splicing on all types of fiber cable, including building entrance, maintenance space, and direct-buried splices.
- Install and manage cable pathways such as cable trays, ladder racks, and J-hooks, ensuring neat and organized routing.
- Pull, route, and secure copper and fiber cabling through pathways, including ceilings, conduits, and other building structures.
- Terminate keystone jacks and modular plugs (RJ45) and perform cable patching and IDF uplinks in accordance with project specifications.
- Assemble and install racks and related hardware for network and telecommunications equipment.
- Run and handle materials, ensuring tools and supplies are available at the work site to support continuous workflow.
- Utilize hand and power tools safely and effectively for cutting, terminating, fastening, and installing cabling and hardware.
- Climb ladders and operate lifts to access elevated work areas, including tight spaces and heights, while following safety protocols.
- Assume responsibility for effective performance of the crew, including providing on-the-job training, coordinating personnel, and aligning tasks with project timelines.
- Adhere to and actively participate in all company, customer, and industry quality and safety standards and regulations, including site-specific requirements.
- Communicate clearly with team members and supervisors regarding project status, issues, and safety concerns.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, including proper storage and handling of tools, equipment, and materials.
Essential Skills
- At least 2 years of experience pulling fiber cabling in commercial or industrial environments.
- At least 2 years of experience performing terminations on fiber and copper cabling.
- At least 2 years of experience using Versiv 2 testers or Fluke testers for cable certification and troubleshooting.
- At least 2 years of experience performing IDF uplinks and cable patching in structured cabling environments.
- At least 2 years of experience terminating keystone jacks and modular plugs (RJ45).
- Strong ability to pull cable through pathways, terminate, and test copper cables (Cat 5 and Cat 6).
- Hands-on experience with structured cabling, including CAT 3, CAT 5, and CAT 6 installations.
- Proficiency with fiber optic cable installation, splicing, and testing using OTDR equipment.
- Ability to read and work from blueprints and structured cabling design documents.
- Experience with cable tray, ladder rack, J-hook installation, and rack assembly.
- Ability to run and handle materials efficiently in a fast-paced construction or industrial setting.
- Comfort working at heights and in confined spaces while following appropriate safety procedures.
- Demonstrated leadership and communication skills to coordinate with crew members and support project timelines.
- OSHA 10 certification.
- Lift operation certification.
- Confined space certification.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and perform extended walking and standing as part of daily duties.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with conduit and cable installation in industrial or manufacturing facilities.
- Familiarity with IDF and MDF environments, including rack and stack of network equipment.
- Experience operating scissor lifts and other aerial work platforms.
- Ability to use trade tools such as punch tools (110 and 66 block blades) and 6/8 position combo crimp tools.
- Proficiency using hand tools including screwdrivers, drywall saws, torpedo levels, tape measures, snips with belt sheaths, needle-nose pliers, channel-lock pliers, hammers, wrench sets, cable strippers, and flashlights.
- Strong attention to detail in labeling, organizing, and documenting cabling and terminations.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and adhere to site-specific procedures and safety protocols.
- Experience working on large-scale, multi-year construction or technology infrastructure projects.
- Reliable punctuality and time management, including the ability to arrive early to accommodate site access and pre-shift activities.

Work Environment
This role is based within a large manufacturing facility that includes both indoor and outdoor work areas. You must be able to walk approximately one mile from the parking lot to the worksite and arrive early enough to participate in pre-shift stretch and flex activities. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, working five 10-hour shifts each week, with extended periods of walking and standing. The environment includes tight spaces, heights, and the use of scissor lifts and ladders, and you will regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Work involves exposure to industrial conditions and requires strict adherence to site safety practices. Steel-toe boots are required, and personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn on-site at all times. Safety vests, gloves, and safety glasses are provided. You will frequently use hand and power tools, operate lifts as certified, and work in areas that may involve confined spaces and elevated platforms.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $51.72 - $51.72/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
