JOB SUMMARY

The Finance & Accounting Manager is responsible for managing the day-to-day accounting operations of The Road Home, ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of all financial records and reporting by the Finance & Accounting (F&A) department. Reporting to the Director Finance & Accounting, this role oversees core accounting processes, including general ledger maintenance, month-end close, reconciliations, cash activity, and audit preparation. The Finance & Accounting Manager leads and mentors accounting staff, supports compliance with all applicable regulations and funder requirements, and works closely with the Director of F&A and Grants Accounting Supervisor to ensure complete, accurate, and well-documented financial information that supports the agency's mission and operational needs.

*This is an in-person position. For the first six months, new F&A staff are required to be in office at the HQ site (1415 S. Main Street, Salt Lake City, UT 84115) five days a week. After this initial onboarding period, F&A staff are permitted to work from home up to two days per week.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

• Manage the day-to-day accounting operations of the agency, including general ledger maintenance, journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules. 

• Coordinate and execute the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timely completion of all assigned accounting deliverables. 

• Prepare preliminary monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including budget-to-actual reports and variance analyses, for review by the Director of F&A. 

• Maintain accurate accounting records and documentation in accordance with GAAP (or GAAP for Nonprofits), internal policies, and documented procedures. 

• Manage cash-related accounting activity, including monitoring balances, recording transactions, executing approved disbursements, and preparing cash statements and forecasts. 

• Ensure proper recognition, tracking, and reconciliation of restricted funds, grants, and contract activity in collaboration with the Grants Accounting Supervisor and Development team. 

• Support the preparation of external financial reports required by funders, grantors, and contracting partners. 

• Manage day-to-day accounting workstreams related to the annual audit, including preparation of schedules, documentation, reconciliations, and responses to auditor requests. 

• Assist with the preparation of tax-related filings and schedules, including IRS Form 990 and other regulatory or program-specific requirements, as assigned. 

• Monitor compliance with documented financial policies, procedures, and internal controls, identifying issues and escalating concerns as appropriate. 

• Maintain organized, accurate, and accessible financial records and audit trails within accounting systems and shared document repositories. 

• Collaborate with program, development, and operations staff to support accurate financial reporting and address accounting-related questions or issues. 

• Attend mandatory agency trainings, including Trauma-Informed Care, Housing Focused, De-escalation, Suicide Prevention, CPR, and more.

• Participate in emergency drills and environmental safety activities, as required. 

• Follow all agency protocols for security, safety, and sanitation to maintain a clean and secure environment for guests and staff. 

• Maintain regular and reliable attendance as an essential function of this position.

Supervisor Duties and Responsibilities

Role-specific 

• Directly supervise Senior and Staff Accountants, providing clear expectations, guidance, and accountability for assigned accounting workstreams. 

• Assign and review accounting tasks to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to established deadlines and procedures. 

• Provide coaching, training, and technical support to accounting staff to strengthen skills, consistency, and professional growth. 

• Manage onboarding and training of new accounting staff, ensuring readiness to perform assigned responsibilities effectively. 

• Promote a culture of accuracy, documentation, accountability, and continuous improvement within the accounting team. 

• Support the Director of F&A in identifying training needs, workflow improvements, and opportunities for cross-training. 

General 

• Model trauma-informed leadership in all interactions with staff and guests. 

• Provide clear, constructive feedback to staff regularly, fostering growth and accountability. 

• Hire, train, mentor, and support team members through hands-on guidance and resource sharing.

• Delegate tasks effectively while ensuring equitable distribution of workload. 

• Resolve conflicts promptly and professionally, using de-escalation techniques and leading difficult conversations with kindness and directness.

• Uphold agency policies consistently and lead by example. 

• Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with employees to exchange feedback, actively listen, and address professional development needs. 

• Develop and implement performance improvement plans and other corrective actions when needed, with measurable goals, equipping staff with the tools and guidance to achieve success. 

• Collaborate cross-departmentally to align team goals with organizational mission. 

• Monitor and ensure completion of all mandatory training, while maintaining accurate participation records. 

• Track and report on team performance metrics (attendance, outcomes, etc.), as needed. 

• Perform employee evaluations as scheduled, offering actionable feedback and tailored support. 

• Advocate for staff needs while balancing operational priorities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required. 

• Master's degree, MBA, and/or CPA or similar certification is strongly preferred. 

• A minimum of five years of progressive accounting experience is required. 

• A minimum of three years of management experience, including direct supervision of staff, is required. 

• Two or more years of experience working in a nonprofit or similar human services organization is preferred. 

• Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), financial reporting, and audit processes is required; knowledge and experience with nonprofit accounting is strongly preferred. 

• Experience with budgeting, forecasting, grant management, and grant reporting is preferred. 

• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, accounting software, and financial reporting tools is required; experience with NetSuite is strongly preferred. 

• Experience working with diverse and/or vulnerable populations is preferred.
