The Dental Hygienist reports to the Chief Dental Officer.SPECIFIC DUTIES:Provide leadership in the development and implementation of CMC’s oral health screening and sealant project.Complete grant reporting requirements as needed to implement projectTransport and set up mobile equipment in a school settingTravel to schools and other selected oral health screening sitesConduct assessment of oral health conditions • Identify and write up dental referralsReview of the health historyConduct assessments for oral cancer screeningEnter dental procedure information into Electronic Health Records systemRemove calculus and plaque (hard and soft deposits) from all surfaces of the teethApply preventive materials to the teeth (e.g., sealants and fluorides)Instruct patients of appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health; (e.g., tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional counseling)Counsel patients about good nutrition and its impact on oral hygieneMaking impressions of patients' teeth for study casts (models of teeth used by dentists to evaluate patient treatment needs)As needed take blood pressure and pulseAs needed take dental x-raysPerform other tasks as neededMINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:Licensed as a Dental Hygienist in the State of CaliforniaAlternative Practice Certificate is preferredKnowledge and skills in delivering dental care to patientsValid California driver's license, proof of auto insurance, and personal transportationKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:Knowledge of current dental hygienist practices and proceduresKnowledge of organization policies, procedures, stems, and objectives • Skill in exercising initiative, judgment, problem-solving, decision-makingSkill in developing and maintaining effective relationships with medical, dental, administrative staff, patients and publicTYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate dental equipment, and other office equipment. Vision must be correctable to 20/40 and hearing must be in the normal range for telephone contacts. Requires working under stress in emergency situations or during irregular hours.TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:Work is performed in an office environment within a clinic setting. Involves frequent contact with staff and the public. Work may be stressful at times.
