Physician - Anesthesiologist

Overview This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit an application within four months of appointment. Award amount is up to $200,000 and eligibility period ranges from one to five years, determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Qualifications Applicants pending completion of required training or license can be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Physicians employed in the VA who previously met qualification standards are considered to have met the basic requirements. Basic Requirements United States citizenship. Non‑citizens may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy. Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from a VA‑approved school in the year of completion. Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. Completion of an ACGME or AOA accredited residency that leads to board certification in an anesthesiology core specialty, or one year of post‑medical‑school training followed by two years of independent practice, or non‑U.S. residency followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice (fellowships creditable). Residency exception: Physicians currently enrolled in accredited residency who otherwise meet the basic requirements are eligible as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must hold a full license, are appointed intermittently, and perform a limited scope of practice under supervision. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Board certified or board eligible in anesthesiology. Preferred experience: fellowship training or other relevant experience considered by the Chief Anesthesia Service. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required. Physical requirements: ability to stand, bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, and lift or move equipment up to 400 pounds, operate anesthesia machines, manage hand‑eye coordination, and maintain composure in high‑stress operating room environments. Responsibilities Manage adult patients undergoing surgical procedures, including pre‑operative assessment, intra‑operative monitoring, and post‑operative recovery. Perform history and physical examination, and prepare patients for anesthesia. Provide general, regional, and monitored anesthesia, and deliver pre‑ and postoperative care, including acute and chronic pain management. Place and utilize invasive monitors and lines: arterial lines, central venous catheters, pulmonary artery catheters, epidurals, spinal catheters, drains, and infusions. Administer anesthesia for device implantation, removal, and repair: pacemakers, cardioversion devices, deep‑brain stimulators, and other neuro‑muscular stimulators. Train medical students, student nurse anesthetists, and residents at all levels. Act as a consultant in critical care and pain management, including management of cardiac or respiratory emergencies and artificial ventilation support. Provide anesthesia support for cardiothoracic cases, coronary artery surgery, valve surgery, and other major vascular procedures involving cardiopulmonary bypass. Manage minimally invasive cardiology interventions, such as transcutaneous aortic valve replacement and mitral valve procedures.
