Dyslexia Specialist

Starting Date: Aug 5, 2026 Job Description A Dyslexia Campus Specialist at Dickinson Junior High School is responsible for providing research-based learning experiences to students identified with dyslexia, managing reporting requirements, and delivering direct intensive instruction in basic literacy skills while consulting staff on classroom accommodations. Qualifications Bachelor's degree from an accredited university Master’s degree (preferred) Valid Texas teaching certificate with required special education endorsements Valid Texas bilingual teaching certificate with required special education endorsements (for bilingual diagnostician positions) Demonstrated competency in Reading intervention and training in dyslexia instruction (preferred training: Reading by Design, Esperanza, or other Dyslexia intervention) ESL certification required no later than March 15 of the first year Special Knowledge/Skills Teaching reading and knowledge of RTI as it relates to reading Knowledge of Texas Dyslexia requirements outlined by TEA Dyslexia Handbook Specific training in methods to instruct students with dyslexia Understanding of dyslexia impact and specialized methods to plan, instruct, collect data, and adjust instruction Openness to change and innovation, effective communication, public relations, interpersonal, organizational and time‑management skills Experience At least three years of successful teaching experience in an assigned level/subject Major Responsibilities Serve as the campus Dyslexia Specialist or campus Bilingual Dyslexia Specialist Implement the District Dyslexia program components at the campus level in English or Spanish Provide direct services in reading/dyslexia/dysgraphia and plan instruction following TEA handbook methods Gather and analyze data to monitor student progress and adjust instruction Consult and collaborate with other teachers to accommodate curricula for students with co‑existing dyslexia needs Use appropriate technology tools (e.g., Learning Ally, Talking Books) Conduct ongoing assessments, manage data, and use data to guide instruction and program improvement Create a safe learning environment and manage student behavior per DISD Student Code of Conduct Maintain accurate student records, prepare for ARD meetings, and document IEP goals and objectives Participate in PLC, district meetings, staff development, and dyslexia training Present information on reading and dyslexia to staff, district, and parents Collaborate with parents and community members and maintain professional records Perform other duties as assigned Expectations of Mental, Physical, and Environmental Demands Standard office and instructional equipment usage; frequent walking, standing, reaching, bending, lifting light items and occasional heavy lifting Exposure to indoor and outdoor work conditions, noise, and biological hazards Maintain emotional control under stress and interact positively with students with behavioral concerns Professional dress and compliance with dress standards; no visible piercings except earrings during work hours Evaluations Performance of this position will be evaluated annually.
