Laboratory Supervisor

Supervises laboratory personnel and activities to ensure timely delivery of accurate test results and compliance with all applicable standards. Performs standard testing and quality control in all areas of the laboratory; assists with development of policies and procedures; and maintains a positive work environment that promotes SPMC values through effective communication and supervision of team members.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

*Supervises day-to-day laboratory operations to ensure the department meets service and performance expectations. Maintains equipment and physical space. Plans and coordinates schedules and assignments, purchasing and inventories, workflow, and workloads. Researches and addresses any technical problems that may occur. Monitors productivity, efficiency, and outcomes. Plans and implements adjustments as needed.

*Supervises laboratory staff. Provides effective leadership and oversight of assigned staff; leads by example and provides support, guidance, coaching and correction when needed. Monitors and manages staff performance, satisfaction and engagement. Completes supervisory tasks in an accurate and timely manner.

*Ensures lab staff are oriented and trained, and that staff competencies are maintained as required by CLIA.

*Performs quality assurance activities. Evaluates data and takes action as needed to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and timeliness of results. Maintains manuals and records.

*Performs laboratory testing, phlebotomy, and related activities of a Medical Technologist. Maintains professional skills.

*Acts as liaison between laboratory and other departments/personnel/patients. Addresses complaints or conflicts in a timely and effective manner.

*Ensures compliance with all District policies and procedures, regulatory requirements and federal, state and local laws. Maintains assigned programs and records accurately and in good order, as required for efficient and effective operations. Assists with planning, budgeting, and execution of strategic initiatives. Performs special projects and other related duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, or equivalent.
  • Three years of clinical laboratory experience.
  • Experience supervising, leading, or coaching others preferred.

Required Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations

Medical Lab Scientist (ASCP) or Certified Laboratory Scientist (NCA), or equivalent.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Working knowledge and competence in laboratory processes, applications, and testing procedures. Demonstrated leadership, communication, education, and coaching skills. Ability to evaluate data to monitor and assess the overall quality and accuracy of tests. Proficient in the use of current technology, including Microsoft Office products. Ability to learn and effectively use electronic medical records and other systems and equipment. Ability to maintain accurate documentation and records. Professional and effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to identify and employ communication strategies appropriate to the audience. Ability to cultivate effective relationships and work in collaboration with providers, other health care professionals, caregivers, and patients. Ability to perform a wide variety of assignments that require the use of independent judgment, problem-solving, organization, prioritization, and interpersonal skills.
