Available shift schedules include 7:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m.–11:00 p.m., and 11:00 p.m.–7:00 a.m., five days per week. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Position Summary This position is responsible for detailed work within the University Police Department. Work involves dealing with the public through personal contact, telephone, and radio communications. It is performed in accordance with department rules and regulations. A uniform designated by the department will be worn at all times while on duty. Employees in this class are assigned to a specialized function that typically requires knowledge abilities acquired through formal training and experience on the job. Guidance and direction are provided by the senior communications officer. The work requires dedication to public service, often under emotional or physical stress, and is reviewed through conferences, written reports, inspection, and observation of results obtained. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies Knowledge of standard police practices and techniques. Knowledge of university properties, population, and traffic control problems. Ability to deal courteously with the public and fellow police officers. Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, and on one's own initiative, to determine a proper course of action. Ability to obtain the proper information through telephone and personal interview. Ability to speak and write effectively. Ability to meet specific physical requirements that may be established by competent authority. Physical Demands This position involves long hours of work sitting or standing at a dispatch console. Duties & Responsibilities Performs dispatcher duties such as answering telephone, monitoring burglar and fire alarms, operating police radios, and performing related clerical tasks. This position has fast, efficient, and accurate receiving, dispatching, and processing of calls and messages to and from police vehicles and personnel (75% of the time).
