The City is recruiting for two Traffic Engineers. Traffic Engineer – Traffic Calming Program Manage, coordinate, and oversee the City’s Traffic Calming Program. Work with residents on traffic calming requests, collect and analyze traffic data. Conduct public outreach, develop and implement traffic calming measures to address community concerns, conduct after‑studies, and prepare recommendations for City Council consideration. Manage the traffic issue request queue for all types of requests, working with the division on evaluations, resolutions, and responses. Perform other duties as assigned. Traffic Engineer – Large Infrastructure Projects Help manage, coordinate, and oversee large transportation infrastructure projects from planning through construction. Support the Transportation Special Projects team and work closely with a Principal Transportation Engineer and a Senior Traffic Engineer on delivery of large‑scale projects. Advance projects through stages of development and implementation. Represent the City in coordination with stakeholders and partner agencies. Apply for and manage grant funding related to the projects. Oversee consultant teams, review technical plans, specifications and reports. Conduct public outreach, provide traffic‑related technical support to other Public Works divisions. Perform other duties as assigned. Benefits Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits Retiree medical benefits available Paid Time Off (PTO) Accruals Paid Holidays Employee Wellness Programs Distinctive Responsibilities Perform neighborhood traffic studies per the City’s “Traffic Calming” policy; work with neighborhood groups to identify problems and potential solutions; organize and conduct neighborhood meetings and seek consensus on alternatives and implementation of actions. Provide support for the City’s appointed Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission (BPAC); research bicycle issues, develop improvement plans and prepare reports to the BPAC. Disseminate information regarding the City’s Transportation Demand Management and vehicular air quality issues. Write memos, correspondence and reports on transportation issues, projects and programs. Prepare specifications, plans, estimates and reports for the construction, maintenance and operation of traffic engineering facilities and street lighting systems. Perform professional engineering duties and advise subdividers and developers on traffic engineering and street lighting requirements. Prepare recommendations for Council action on speed limit ordinances; meet with representatives of other governmental agencies, major employers and citizen groups to discuss traffic problems. Act as an advisor to other City departments and divisions on traffic control and safety matters. Supervise and assist in field traffic engineering studies, topographical and construction surveys. Perform construction inspection work requiring specialized traffic engineering knowledge. Administer and coordinate the repair and maintenance by contract personnel of traffic signal equipment and review and approve invoices for payments; design traffic striping and signing for pedestrian and vehicular movement. Perform traffic signal system programming and operation tasks, and conduct limited maintenance of the traffic signal system. May provide supervision to contract signal maintenance personnel. Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, or related field. Two years of professional experience in traffic, transportation or civil engineering. Current registration as a Professional Civil or Traffic Engineer issued by the State of California. Knowledge and Abilities Working knowledge of modern traffic engineering principles, applicable laws, codes and regulations. Experience with microprocessor and computer control systems used for traffic controls. Proficiency in engineering mathematics, drafting, survey methods, and traffic control devices. Experience with computer applications, including traffic modeling concepts and applications. Understanding of construction materials, office practices and related software. Ability to represent the City in contacts with agencies, community groups, businesses, regulators and the public. Ability to analyze traffic data, evaluate alternatives, provide recommendations. Strong communication skills, oral and written. Ability to work independently and on a team. Basic computer skills. Travel to various sites within the City. Observance of safety principles. Licenses and Certificates Valid class C California driver’s license with a safe driving record. Professional Civil or Traffic Engineer registration issued by the State of California. Desirable Qualifications International Municipal Signal Association (I.M.S.A.) Level I and Level II Traffic Signal Technician certificates.
