Job Description The Groundskeeper plays a vital role in the Recreation Services Department by maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and beauty of parks, golf courses, buildings, racquet courts, and medians. Responsibilities include performing intermediate semi‑skilled work in the upkeep of municipal parks and grounds, including general park areas, roadway medians, swales, golf greens, fairways, tees, bunkers, roughs, and clay or turf athletic fields and tennis courts. Work is performed under regular supervision and includes other related tasks as needed. Responsibilities Maintain parks and grounds by mowing, edging, watering, and fertilizing. Perform repairs and upkeep of park buildings, equipment, and facilities. Manage waste by collecting trash and ensuring waste bins are clean. Care for landscaping by planting, mulching, trimming, and maintaining trees, shrubs, and flowers. Operate and maintain groundskeeping equipment safely. Assist with tasks, projects, and special events to enhance park aesthetics, functionality, and safety. Conduct safety inspections of playgrounds, boardwalks, docks, and other park areas. Control weeds and turf by removing weeds and applying fertilizers and pesticides. Install and treat grass by laying sod, applying grass seed, and complying with regulations. Additional duties may include: Golf course maintenance: greens, tees, bunkers. Athletic field maintenance: level and repair clay portions, install bases, pitch rubbers, home plates, paint field lines. Parks: repair grills, tables, trash receptacles, benches, gates, fences, replace light bulbs, assist with carpentry repair. Cleans and sanitizes public restrooms. Beautification: observe safety protocols while working in roadways, medians, and swales. Racquet sports: maintain, level and repair clay portions of tennis courts, set lines, install posts, net supports, and nets. Prepare courts for events. Manage drainage and prevent erosion, ensuring chemical use is sustainable. Knowledge Required Methods, materials, and practices for park and grounds maintenance, golf courses, athletic fields, and courts. General knowledge of equipment: mowers, tractors, aerators, chainsaws, small power tools. Landscaping and horticulture practices. Pest and weed control methods, including herbicides, insecticides, and pesticides. Tools, materials, equipment for general maintenance of benches, fences, gates, etc. Standard building trades techniques. Environmental best practices and regulations. Safety guidelines for public park areas and recreation facilities. Custodial cleaning methods. Safety precautions for duties. Skills Operation of maintenance equipment. Preventive maintenance and basic repairs of groundskeeping equipment. Abilities Apply fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides following regulatory guidelines. Build and maintain effective relationships with associates and the public. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Use hand tools. Operate simple machinery. Perform strenuous tasks for extended periods outdoors. Acquire new skills and knowledge as required. Communicate clearly with team members, supervisors, and the public. Prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently to meet deadlines. Education and Experience Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Six (6) months of general maintenance experience. Preferred Qualifications Best Management Practices Certification, and/or Fertilizer Applicators License. Special Requirements Valid State of Florida Class "E" driver's license with no more than six points in a three‑year period. Abstained from the use of cigarettes, cigars, or other tobacco products for at least one year before hire and shall abstain during employment. Beautification & Row Maintenance – Monday Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (Holidays as needed). Parks & Common Grounds – Monday Friday, 6:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (Holidays as needed). Physical and Environmental Demands The environmental conditions and physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Occasionally ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, etc. Constantly moving between work sites, lifting or carrying up to 50 pounds. Standing or sitting for prolonged periods. Repeated motions with wrists, hands, fingers. Operating machinery, power tools, motor vehicles. Maintaining safe handling of chemicals. Communicating and operating a computer or equipment requiring manual dexterity. Working in outdoor areas with variable temperatures, noise, drafts, wildlife.
