Job Description / Essential Elements:
SPECIAL EDUCATION - DESIGNATED INSTRUCTION AND SERVICES
INCLUSION SPECIALIST
The Inclusion Specialist coordinates with the school principal, the school psychologist and is supervised by the Director of Special Services/Special Education. Supports specially designed instruction, behavior plans and related services to assist a student with a disability to benefit educationally in a general education classroom.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Acts as a consultant to general education teachers concerning a student's progress, and to make recommendations of classroom enrichment activities for students with disabilities.
2. Provides an assessment of a student's behavioral, social, and academic skills.
3. Develops and implements behavior support/intervention plans for students with disabilities. Assures that school site staff are informed about each student's plan.
4. Advises students with disabilities and assists them in making decisions concerning educational, vocational and personal goals.
5. Assesses student progress on a regular basis, revises Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals as appropriate, but at least annually.
6. Works cooperatively with parents, general education teachers, school psychologists and principal, vice principal and counselors in implementing the IEP as agreed upon. Serves as a liaison between all parties.
7. Develops an IEP for students with disabilities, including parent(s) and other required professionals.
8. Provides information regarding accommodations and modifications pertinent to student's strengths and weaknesses as identified in the IEP.
9. Demonstrates, models and assists teachers in providing instructional strategies that best meet the needs of students with disabilities.
10. Identifies supplementary aids, assistive technology and services for helping student's become self-advocates for their learning difficulties.
11. Plans and coordinates the work of Special Education Behavior Support Aides and/or other paraprofessionals as required.
12. Assists teachers in writing and implementing IEP goals and objectives consistent with State Standards in reading and math.
13. Uses diagnostic profiles to prepare teaching materials in reading and math.
14. Acts as consultant to general education teachers, providing them with prescriptive materials for students with disabilities.
15. Cooperatively works to identify students who are program-eligible.
16. Serves on the Student Study Team and works cooperatively with site administrators and general education teachers in contacting the parent/guardian to obtain consent for assessments to be done for determining eligibility under IDEA.
17. Chairs IEP meetings for students served by general education teachers.
18. Performs other duties as assigned to meet the individual needs of students.
Qualifications
A. Knowledge
1. Understanding of District, County, State and Federal policies/regulations.
2. Support student's goals pertaining to WorkAbility I (WAI), Workforce Investment Act (WIA) and Transition Partnership Program (TPP).
3. Effective English usage.
4. Effective record keeping procedures
5. Knowledge of student-teacher-parent relationships.
6. Understanding of confidentiality and related ethics.
7. Basic fundamentals of computer operations.
B. Skills
1. Two years experience working in Special Education program.
2. Ability to provide effective leadership and use good judgment.
3. Experienced in the development of work sites in the community.
4. Vocational training, workshops/seminars.
5. Capability to work and relate well to students, staff and potential employers.
6. Ability to establish rapport with students, parents, and staff.
7. Maintains accurate, complete, and timely records.
8. Writes legibly (communicate effectively written/orally).
9. Ability to drive an automobile (possession of valid California drivers license).
10. Experience coordinating special education services between agencies.
11. Ability to organize work.
12. Techniques of diplomacy.
Physical Requirements
A. Hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone with or without hearing aids.
B. Speak so that others may understand at normal levels and on the telephone.
C. Operate a telephone, fax and computer.
D. Operate a motor vehicle.
E. Sit, stand, walk, bend over, stoop, grasp, reach overhead, push, pull and move, lift and/or carry 0-25 pounds to waist height.
Work Environment
Employee in the position will be required to work indoors in a standard classroom environment consisting of, but not limited to, tables, chairs and orthopedic devices; travel by motor vehicle outdoors in varying degrees of temperatures; and come in direct contact with students, parents, teachers/staff and public.
