Director of Finance

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Finance will oversee the fiscal operations of the agency. Working with the management team, they will ensure the agency is well poised, from a financial standpoint, to respond to opportunities that will further the organization’s mission. Journey Home is looking for a reliable and knowledgeable person with the ability to communicate the agency’s fiscal story to funders, board members and the public.

Role Description The Director of Finance is a full-time, hybrid role based in West Hartford, CT, with the ability to work from home part of the time. This role oversees all financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and long-term financial planning to support Journey Home’s mission and strategic objectives. The Director of Finance prepares, reviews, and analyzes monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports for leadership, the Board of Directors, funders, and other stakeholders. Responsibilities include maintaining internal controls, managing accounting processes, overseeing audits, and ensuring compliance with applicable nonprofit accounting standards, grant requirements, and regulatory guidelines. The role also collaborates closely with program and development teams on grant budgeting and reporting, supports scenario planning and risk assessment, and provides financial insights to guide decision-making and resource allocation.

Qualifications

• Strong foundation in Finance and Financial Planning, including budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial strategy.
• Proficiency in preparing and interpreting Financial Statements and Financial Reporting for internal and external stakeholders.
• Advanced Analytical Skills to evaluate financial performance, model scenarios, and support data-informed decisions.
• Experience with nonprofit or fund accounting, grants management, and compliance with relevant regulations and standards (e.g., GAAP).
• Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field; CPA, MBA, or equivalent advanced credential preferred.
• Proficiency with accounting software and spreadsheet tools; ability to design and improve financial systems and processes. Experience with MIP Abila is strongly encouraged.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate complex financial information clearly to non-financial audiences, including leadership and Board members.
• Collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively in a mission-driven environment with diverse community stakeholders.
