Conservation Crew Technician

Trout Unlimited is a national organization dedicated to conserving, protecting, and restoring North America's cold-water fisheries and their watersheds. With 300,000 members, 400 chapters and councils, and more than 45 offices nationwide, we work with grassroots volunteers, scientists, and policy experts. Position Summary We are seeking energetic and motivated individuals for a seasonal technician position in West Virginia for spring/early summer 2026. The position offers flexible start dates, maximum performance periods of 6 months or 1,000 hours, and on-the-job training in agriculture exclusion fencing, alternative watering systems, riparian tree plantings, stream habitat enhancement, bank shaping, invasive species removal, heavy equipment operation, stream crossings, and field surveys. Work sites will be throughout West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland with overnight travel required, typically 4–10 hour workdays. Duties and Responsibilities Organize materials and tools for efficient task execution. Construct habitat restoration projects under guidance from Trout Unlimited staff. Build high tensile fences and restore riparian habitat. Follow all safety procedures and rules. Install pipelines and water troughs. Install stream crossings. Plant riparian trees. Prepare reports documenting completed work. Represent Trout Unlimited appropriately when interacting with landowners and partners. Direct crew members, manage material transport and equipment usage when the crew leader is absent. Requirements General knowledge of conservation techniques and best management practices in agricultural settings. Knowledge of high-tensile fence construction methods. Knowledge of basic construction practices. Ability to operate farm machinery such as tractors, skid loaders, fence post drivers, and power tools. Ability to operate motorized vehicles up to 20,000 lbs gross weight and tow trailers up to 10,000 lbs. Capability to acquire required licenses, certificates, permits, or other operating qualifications.Ability to pass a background check. Desired Qualifications Knowledge of fence building. Knowledge of plumbing systems and watering troughs. Experience operating heavy equipment and following safety procedures. Experience driving trailers and hauling equipment.Commercial Driver’s License. First Aid/CPR training. Experience living and working in remote teams.
