Overview

This role is situated at a prominent medical facility located at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Our organization is recognized as the leading medical institution within the United States Army. This facility, with a capacity of 425 beds, serves as the largest Department of Defense medical center and is the only Level 1 trauma center in the area. Additionally, it houses the Center for the Intrepid, an outpatient rehabilitation center. The organization comprises ten distinct entities, including community medical clinics, all centered around the Army's largest inpatient hospital. Over 8,000 personnel, including soldiers, airmen, sailors, civilians, and contractors, are dedicated to providing care to both injured service members and the broader San Antonio community.

The history of this medical center dates back to 1879, when the first Post Hospital was established as a modest medical dispensary in a single-story wooden structure. The first permanent hospital was constructed in 1886, followed by an 84-bed Station Hospital built in 1908 on the western side of the post.

Preference will be given to candidates who are Board Certified in Internal Medicine.

Experience in Inpatient and Consultative Medicine is also preferred.

Responsibilities

• Function as an Internal Medicine Physician within a Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH), providing a wide range of health services for adults, from preventive care to the management of complex acute and chronic conditions.
• Act as an attending physician on the inpatient general medicine ward.
• Facilitate and integrate care across various components of the healthcare system, including subspecialty services, hospitals, home health agencies, and nursing facilities; admit patients to the hospital as necessary.
• Lead and oversee a multidisciplinary clinical team, which may include nurses, social workers, therapists, and technicians, responsible for patient care and panel management.
• Serve as a consultant for both inpatient and outpatient care within the Internal Medicine Consult Service, being available for telephonic or in-person consultations when on call.
• Deliver comprehensive primary care for adults and Department of Defense beneficiaries, adhering to care standards, the PCMH model, Army policies, and relevant regulations.
• Provide education and consultation to other healthcare providers as assigned.
• Ensure all medical services are documented accurately and maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA standards.
• Engage in Continuing Medical Education and quality assurance initiatives.
• Perform moderate to heavy lifting, up to 45 pounds, as required.
• Offer consultative preoperative and perioperative advice to surgical specialties and instruct on consultative medicine to house staff.
• Participate in educational activities for residents and interns, contributing to the ongoing quality improvement of the Internal Medicine Training Program.
• Attend departmental or hospital meetings and engage in Continuing Medical Education and Quality Assurance activities.
• Carry out additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Must be a US Citizen.
• To qualify, candidates must meet the educational and experiential criteria outlined below. Experience includes both paid and unpaid roles, such as volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, community, student, social). All relevant experience will be considered, and your resume should clearly detail your qualifications. If qualifying through education, transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Basic Requirements for Physician (Internal Medicine):

• Degree: A Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent from an accredited institution in the United States or Canada. This degree must be recognized by the appropriate accrediting bodies at the time of attainment. For foreign medical degrees, equivalency to accredited US schools must be demonstrated through permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. (Note: Transcripts or proof of foreign equivalency must be included with your application.)
• Licensure: Candidates must hold a current, unrestricted license as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a US territory.
• Graduate Training: Following the attainment of a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, candidates must have completed at least one year of supervised clinical experience, such as an internship or the first year of a residency program in an accredited institution.

Residency Training for GP-14:

• Candidates must have successfully completed accredited residency training in Internal Medicine and possess equivalent experience and training totaling at least four years. Experience cannot substitute for the required residency training for this specialty.
