This excepted service position is being filled under the provisions of the Pathways Internship Program, which is designed to provide students enrolled in educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities. The program allows students to be exposed to the work of the government through federal internships while pursuing their degrees. The internship also provides federal managers a ready source of student employees and potential permanent employees upon completion of the program requirements.

This position is not a routine telework position or summer internship. Selected applicants will be required, per mission requirements, to physically report to the DOJ OIG office location in which they are assigned and can work the duration of their academic career.

If you are selected as an Information Technology Intern, you will work with higher graded staff in support of office programs and activities to gain practical work experience that augments training in an academic course of study.

• IT Customer Service- Working within the customer service group on a variety of Help Desk functions to include desktop support, mobile device support and various customer support needs. Assisting with the installation of new hardware and/or rebuild existing hardware in accordance with standards and project/operations goals and requirements. Assisting with new user hardware and software setup; contribute to the development and maintenance of infrastructure systems.
• IT Software Applications- Assisting IT specialists monitoring and on occasion performs limited of duties in information technology and information systems. Assisting IT specialists with project management duties including tracking and reporting on projects through their lifecycle. Assisting IT specialists translate the functional and business requirements of customers and stakeholders into automated application systems and databases.
• IT Engineering- Assisting IT specialist implementing established procedures with analysis of LAN system needs for growth and expansion to incorporate personal computer (PC) LANs into the wide area network (WAN).Assisting IT specialists to design, develop, customize, and implement a wide range of hardware and software to support large-scale LAN/WAN systems including protocols, simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP) management systems, communications controllers, bridges, routers, and other network devices that support extensive operations referring potential problems to more experienced specialists. Participating in projects to prototype and pilot new system concepts and enhancements.
• IT Security- Assisting IT specialists by performing routine Cybersecurity using a variety of monitoring tools to identify and remediate potential security vulnerabilities. Assisting IT specialists to obtain Authority to Operate and Test determinations following testing and hardening of information technology systems to meet Department of Justice, Office of the Chief Information Officer, security standards following applicable Federal Information Security Management Act standards referring potential problems to more experienced specialists. Assisting IT specialists identify, implement, and assess common IT security controls; develops and updates SSP, and coordinates with the Information System Owner, any changes to the IT system and assesses the security impact of those changes.
• The student will participate in an OIG-wide mentorship program.
• The student will perform other duties as assigned.

• You must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better for the duration of this internship (failure to meet this requirement will result in immediate termination).
• The student will participate in an OIG-wide mentorship program.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

• Must be at least 16 years of age.
• Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a Technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school, at a qualifying educational institution on a half-time or full-time basis.
• Must be in good academic standing with a cumulative GPA (grade point average) of 3.0 or better (must provide a transcript and proof of enrollment/acceptance letter); these standards will be in effect for the duration of the internship.
• Must maintain enrollment/continue education throughout the duration of employment under the Pathways Program.

Minimum Qualifications : In addition to meeting the Basic Qualifications stated above, you must also meet the minimum qualifications for the appropriate grade level, or applicable general or specialized experience.

To qualify for the GS-9 level , you must have two academic years of graduate level education, a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree, or one year of specialized experience at the GS-7 level or equivalent.

Specialized experience is defined as progressively responsible work in multiple IT disciplines such as IT applications and programs, IT security, and IT Operations and customer service and programs office support work that indicates the ability to perform the duties of an Information Technology Intern. Examples of specialized experience include:

• Assisting with updating and maintaining, and organizing SharePoint sites and content, and resources to support organizational needs.
• Supporting the development and implementation of an enterprise audiovisual (AV) environment fora new facility, including assisting with technology setup. documentation, testing, and coordination.
• Assisting with project management activities, including tracking project documentation, and preparing status reports throughout the project lifecycle.
• Providing general assistance with information technology and information systems projects, operations, and support activities.
• Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned.

In addition, have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the following five competencies:

Customer Service -Works with clients and customers (that is any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.

*Only graduate-level education in excess of the first 18 semester hours will be combined with any specialized experience you may possess.
