Maintenance Carpenter — Central Alabama VA Health Care SystemOpenings: 2 · Location: Montgomery, AL or Tuskegee, AL (assigned to one campus; occasional work at the other as needed) · Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM, 40 hours/week · Type: Full-time, hourly W2 contract, 12 months from award · Overtime: Occasional, paid at time and a halfPay rate: $22.89 per hour, plus a health and welfare fringe benefit of $5.55 per hour (up to 40 hours/week), 11 paid federal holidays, 2 weeks paid vacation after one year, and paid sick leave under EO 13706. Overtime is paid at time and a half.Aptive Resources is hiring two experienced carpenters to support the Facilities/Engineering shop at the Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System (CAVHCS). You will work on-site at a VA medical center, reporting to the campus shop supervisor, handling day-to-day carpentry repairs, alterations and small construction projects across a hospital campus that serves Veterans.Primary ResponsibilitiesWhat you will doMeasure, cut, construct and repair wood and wood-substitute items such as scaffolding, staging parts, panels, bin pallets, concrete forms, drywall and roof deckingMeasure, cut, construct, install, repair and modify building components including rafters, walls, staircases, windows and frames, trim work and cabinetsIndependently plan and complete projects involving framework, rafters, doors, finished paneling, windows, interior and exterior trim, staircases, trusses and beamsPlan, measure and lay out carpentry materials using broad knowledge of wood materials and substitutes, with general and precision woodworking techniquesInstall and repair metal framing for walls and drop ceilingsPerform concrete and masonry work as assignedComplete a written daily log of hours and materials used for each work order, submitted every FridayCommunicate by 2-way radio and telephone per VA policy and coordinate with VA staff and supervisors during emergenciesMinimum QualificationsRequired qualificationsAt least 3 years of documented carpentry experience (a current resume is required; the VA reviews and approves each candidate)OSHA 10-hour or OSHA 30-hour Construction card, or ability to complete OSHA 10 training before startWorking knowledge of metal framing, drop ceilings, concrete and masonryAbility to pass a federal background investigation and fingerprinting; VA badge must be issued before the first day of workAbility to provide your own basic hand tools: hammer, tape measure and screwdrivers at minimumAbility to provide your own PPE: OSHA-approved steel-toed work boots (ANSI Z41.1), hearing protection and eye protectionReliable personal transportation; occasional travel between the Montgomery and Tuskegee campuses is at your own expense (no government vehicles, no mileage reimbursement).
