Lifeguard Position
Every shift as a Lifeguard is active and fast-paced. You'll rotate stations while keeping a sharp eye on the pool and surrounding areas, enforce safety rules, and step in quickly to assist patrons or respond to emergencies. You'll check water conditions, help with light cleaning and setup, and spend plenty of time interacting with guests to keep the environment positive and welcoming. Shifts can include mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, so flexibility is key.

We're looking for dependable, safety-focused individuals who are comfortable working with people of all ages and can stay calm under pressure. Strong communication skills and a commitment to safety are essential. Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain required lifeguard, CPR, AED, and first aid certifications.
Incumbents are responsible for providing safety of guests at an aquatic facility by anticipating, recognizing, responding to and managing potentially dangerous situations including emergency situations, and in addition to instructing swim and water safety programs.
Reporting Structure: Receives direction from higher-level aquatics supervisory and management staff.
Typical duties include patrolling the pool area to observe activities of individuals in an aquatic facility to ensure participant safety and compliance with facility rules. Provides general customer service and communicates with the public regarding fees, policies, rules and general information about the facility or event. Instructs swim and water safety programs in accordance with American Red Cross standards at an aquatic facility. Maintains appropriate records associated with an aquatic facility. Performs tasks involved in the general operation of an aquatic facility, including physical tasks which involve moving various pieces of equipment and basic mechanical tasks. Enforces facility and public health rules and regulations. Cleans aquatic facilities; performs and records chemical tests; turns fountains and related water features off and on. Represents the City of Casper by responding to the public, citizens, its employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner while continuously maintaining a positive customer service demeanor. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Knowledge of customer service principles, basic principles and practices of safety in aquatic facilities, and swimming instruction principles. Ability to work a variety of shifts including weekends, nights, and holidays as needed, swim 200 yards without stopping, tread water for two (2) minutes without the use of arms, and retrieve a diving brick during a timed test. Instruct classes, be flexible with assignments which may change, plan and lead classes toward determined goals, handle stressful working conditions including emergency situations, work enthusiastically with groups of children, establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, demonstrate leadership among groups of adults and children, keep accurate records, maintain a neat and professional appearance, communicate effectively verbally and in writing, follow written and verbal instructions and direction, routinely demonstrate the City of Casper core values, follow all City safety rules and procedures and reports all accidents/incidents immediately to supervisor.
Skill in swimming and water safety, instructing classes, operating in a courteous, knowledgeable, and tactful manner with staff and general public.
Education and experience: No previous training or experience required. Must be at least 15 years of age.
Licensing and certifications: Current First Aid and CPR certificates required. American Red Cross Lifeguard certification required. American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification preferred.
If an applicant does not possess a current Lifeguard certification, completion of the City's internal certification program for First Aid, CPR, and American Red Cross Lifeguard will be required. Applicants must pass a pre-course swim test prior to being accepted into the certification program.

Applicants who have failed a pre-employment screen or have been terminated from the City of Casper are ineligible for employment consideration for 12 months. You will become eligible for consideration 12 months from the date of your incident (pre-employment screen or termination). The City of Casper utilizes direct deposit for payroll purposes. Driving records are required for all new employees regardless of the position's driving requirements. If the employee has not held a Wyoming driver's license for the last three years, the employee must provide at their own initiation and expense a driving record from their previous state(s) of residence.
Physical and Environmental Conditions: City of Casper employees in data creation and modification, security sensitive or safety and protective positions are subject to pre-employment drug testing. Some employees may be subject to random drug testing if their responsibilities include: emergency response/rescue, handling or working with hazardous materials, including chemicals as well as solid and liquid waste, operating or maintaining water and wastewater systems, writing or modifying code, maintaining, or modifying City data systems including work on networks, servers, and communication systems, CDL operations and driving, operating power-driven machinery or equipment, creating or modifying health, financial, security and or risk documents or assessments, working with or directing minors. Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Incumbent may be subject to perform duties either indoors or outdoors, which may include extreme climate/weather conditions (warm humid indoors/unpredictable weather outdoors) and ongoing exposure to sun and pool chemicals such as chlorine. The nature of duties involves constant mental and visual attention. Incumbents in this position will be in situations where they may experience critical/traumatic events and need to have the ability to quickly move between workspaces.
Minor labor restrictions:
- 15 Years of Age: Maximum hours of work on a school day: 3 hours. Maximum hours of work during a school week: 18 hours. Maximum hours of work on a non-school day: 8 hours. Maximum hours of work during a non-school week: 40 hours. Work hours: 7:00am to 7:00pm. Extended to 9:00pm from June 1st through Labor Day. NO operating power-driven equipment at all, on public roads or on City Grounds. Includes all power-driven tools such as trimmers, weed eaters, leaf blowers, etc. Includes all cars, trucks, ATVs, golf carts, riding mowers, etc. Cannot drive any vehicle (including personal) for work purposes – i.e., errands or changing work locations. Cannot utilize any type of oven to reheat or cook food. Cannot function as a slide monitor at the top of elevated water slides
- 16 Years of Age: Maximum hours of work on a school day and non-school day: 8 hours. Maximum hours of work during a school week and non-school week: 40 hours. Work hours: 5:00am to 10:00pm on a school night. Extended to 12:00am on non-school nights. NO driving on public roadways, even with a valid driver's license. Cannot drive any vehicle (including personal) for work purposes - i.e., errands or changing work locations. May operate ATVs, golf carts, riding mowers, etc. on City grounds ONLY (may not go on public roadways). Must meet WARM driving criteria in order to operate ATVs, golf carts, riding mowers, etc. on City grounds. May operate weed eaters, leaf blowers, and the like, but no other power-driven equipment or tools
