Electrician (Commercial)

Under general supervision, provides skilled commercial electrical services for construction and maintenance projects within the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC). Performs inspections, installation, testing, troubleshooting, and repairs of electrical devices, fixtures, lighting, machinery, controls, and equipment in accordance with building and safety code regulations and in compliance with the National Electrical Code. This job class is treated as FLSA non-exempt, considered a DRIVING position and is subject to working on-call and weekend hours. Distinguishing Features: The Electrician (Commercial) performs highly skilled electrical work primarily in existing commercial, educational, and institutional facilities. This position is distinguished by a strong emphasis on electrical troubleshooting, diagnostics, repair, and modification of energized and de-energized systems rather than routine new construction installation. Work involves identifying and resolving complex electrical issues in operational facilities where downtime must be minimized. The Electrician (Commercial) must exercise independent judgment to diagnose problems, determine appropriate corrective actions, and ensure all work conforms to the National Electrical Code and applicable safety regulations. This role requires a broad working knowledge of commercial service work, including retrofit projects, system upgrades, and repairs in occupied buildings.
Essential Functions: (Essential functions may vary among positions, but may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions in this classification.)
- Installs, inspects, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs electrical systems for new and existing commercial installations. Systems include commercial electrical equipment, machinery, devices, fixtures, LED lighting, switches, low-voltage systems, lighting controls, transformers, relays, contactors, and controls.
- Identifies issues and performs necessary repairs on commercial electrical equipment and electrical systems using testing instruments and equipment when required.
- Assists in the inspection of new electrical equipment, machinery, devices, and electrical systems for both new and older commercial buildings in conformity to SRPMIC Design Guidelines and NEC.
- Works proficiently on a daily basis with: Seal tight, Liquid tight, MC Cable, Flex, EMT, IMC, PVC, and GRC conduit, various wire insulations, conduit and box fill requirements, fasteners and fittings, proper circuit breaker fuse & disconnect sizing, lighting controls and distribution panels, proper grounding, bonding methods, and requirements, and proper wire management. Performs excellent workmanship, etc. in accordance with NEC requirements.
- Performs work safely in close proximity to various voltages, including single and 3 phase equipment: 120/240V, 120/208V, 277/480V, 3P 4W?, and DC circuitry.
- Receives and completes work orders. Performs pre-task planning to select proper materials and hardware, estimates required labor and identifies safety issues.
- Follows proper lock-out-tag-out (LOTO) safety protocol and installs proper lock-out-tag-out safety devices on various electrical equipment, machinery, and devices as required by NEC and OSHA.
- Works independently or cooperatively and coordinates with other electricians and construction trades.
- Safely operates electrical tools and equipment, including, but not limited to generators, compressors, benders, meters, and other equipment used in the commercial electrical field.
- Operates work-truck to load and unload equipment and material from warehouse, vendors, or wholesale houses to and from job sites; drives to and from job site. Operates boom truck to perform work in high places.
- Performs other job related duties as assigned to maintain and enhance departmental and agency operations.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:
- Knowledge of general policies, procedures and standards followed in the construction trades.
- Knowledge of current OSHA rules and regulations; knowledge of current building and safety codes.
- Knowledge of the current National Electrical Code.
- Knowledge of proper use of electrical equipment and tools, including knowledge in reading and interpreting, blueprints, diagrams, and sketches.
- Knowledge of commercial electrical methods and techniques related to the construction and maintenance of commercial buildings.
- Knowledge of commercial electrical principles, concepts, and practices related to construction and maintenance of commercial buildings.
- Knowledge of commercial electrical service-work and commercial troubleshooting skills.
- Knowledge of basic electrical theory as applied to commercial buildings.
- Skill in troubleshooting various electrical problems for the construction and maintenance of commercial buildings and equipment.
- Skill in the proper inspection, installation, and repair of wiring and electrical systems for both new commercial construction and older commercial buildings.
- Skill in applying electrical knowledge and experience to diverse electrical applications.
- Ability to read, understand, interpret, and follow commercial blueprints; notwithstanding working from drawings, sketches, and work-orders.
- Ability to follow oral or written instructions
- Ability to work in dirt and dusty conditions.
- Ability to work in weather-exposed situation.
- Ability to work at heights up to 50 feet.
- Ability to pull wire through conduit repetitiously.
- Ability to work professionally and competently either independently or cooperatively with other electricians and trades.
- Ability to measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble, and install electrical conduit using rulers, measuring devices, hand tools, pipe threader, and conduit bender.
- Ability to safely operate boom-truck (up to 30ft in air), single-person lift and scissor lifts, and extension ladders.
- Ability to properly use fall arrest equipment.
- Ability to walk, climb, lift, stand, bend, stoop, perform repetitive movements, and carry objects, including but not limited to electrical tools, materials and equipment, weighing 50 - 90 pounds and to otherwise physically perform and complete electrical tasks as directed by supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Experience: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, completion of a certified Electrical Apprenticeship Program, and a minimum of three (3) years' experience as a commercial journey level electrician. Six (6) years of commercial or industrial electrical experience may substitute in lieu of the electrical apprenticeship certification.
- For enrolled Community members without a GED, must obtain a GED. Requires participation in the HR GED Program and successful completion of the Arizona state certified exam in order to continue employment with SRPMIC.
Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of training and experience that would enable the candidate to satisfactorily perform and meet the duties and responsibilities required may be considered in meeting the stated minimum qualifications. Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill
Special Requirements
Successful completion of a background investigation is required for hire. A more extensive background investigation and fingerprint will be required for candidates considered for hire to work in our Education or Early Childhood Education facilities. Candidates that will come in contact with children in our Early Childhood Education Program must also provide proof of immunizations at time of hire, and will be required to maintain booster shots on immunizations and take a TB skin test or x-ray annually.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License.
Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
