Work Environment

The EVS team operates in a union environment, while supervisors and managers serve in non-union roles. The work setting is fast-paced and patient-centered, requiring frequent movement throughout hospital units, regular facility inspections, and close collaboration with clinical and support staff. You will use standard office equipment, desktop computers, and staffing and scheduling applications, as well as oversee the use of cleaning equipment, floor care machinery, and chemical agents. The expected attire is business formal, appropriate for a professional healthcare environment.

Responsibilities
- Create, maintain, and adjust staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage across all assigned hospital and satellite facility areas.
- Uphold human resources policies and provide ongoing training and coaching for staff and management to support consistent, compliant performance.
- Evaluate staff work habits, performance, and attendance; document observations and make recommendations regarding performance management, retention, and promotion.
- Take corrective action in alignment with hospital policies and applicable labor agreements when performance or conduct issues arise.
- Maintain required records, compile statistics, and prepare reports as needed to support departmental operations and compliance.
- Monitor workflows and implement process improvements to enhance the quality, consistency, and efficiency of environmental services.
- Plan, schedule, and direct staff assignments for hospital and satellite facilities, tracking progress and providing timely feedback and guidance.
- Conduct regular tours of the hospital to observe and inspect cleanliness, ensure work is completed to standard, and address issues promptly.
- Train staff on proper techniques for cleaning and disinfecting hospital facilities, including the safe and effective use of chemical agents and equipment.
- Instruct and oversee staff in the correct collection, handling, and disposal of infectious and regulated materials in accordance with hospital and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure staff follow all safety and sanitation policies and procedures specific to acute care hospital environments.
- Ensure employees adhere to organizational policies and applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
- Serve as a communication link between frontline staff and upper management, relaying information, feedback, and operational needs.
- Participate in the hiring process by screening applications, interviewing candidates, and providing recommendations for selection.
- Conduct daily patient satisfaction rounds to gather real-time feedback, address concerns, and ensure service standards are consistently met.
- Coordinate floor care and floor maintenance activities to maintain safe, clean, and presentable surfaces throughout the facility.
- Support and oversee housekeeping, custodial, and janitorial duties within the EVS scope, ensuring alignment with hospital standards and infection prevention practices.
- Collaborate effectively in a unionized environment, working within labor agreements while leading a non-union supervisory role.
- Respond to operational issues and emergencies as needed, including during non-standard hours, nights, weekends, and holidays, when on-call.
- Use basic office equipment and computer applications to manage schedules, staffing, documentation, and reporting with accuracy and confidentiality.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Experience managing at least 25 full-time employees.
- Healthcare or hospital facility experience, particularly in environmental services, housekeeping, or custodial operations.
- Demonstrated experience in supervision within an environmental services, housekeeping, custodial, or janitorial setting.
- Floor care knowledge and hands-on experience with floor care and floor maintenance.
- Knowledge of infection prevention and healthcare-associated infection (HAI) practices relevant to hospital environments.
- Ability to gather, analyze, and communicate information clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to learn and work within department, unit, and agency policies and procedures, and to apply laws, rules, and policies affecting assigned work.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of personnel records and patient information, including understanding and applying HIPAA regulations and hospital policies.
- Ability to exercise initiative, prioritize changing or conflicting tasks, and work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to handle a high-volume workload with accuracy and efficiency while meeting deadlines.
- Strong teamwork skills and the ability to establish and maintain cooperative, productive working relationships with clinical, administrative, and support staff.
- Proficiency with basic office equipment such as photocopiers, fax machines, printers, telephones, and desktop computers.
- Proficiency with computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases, and the ability to quickly learn staffing and scheduling systems.
- Customer service orientation and the ability to conduct patient-facing rounds to support satisfaction and service quality.
- Strong management and leadership skills, including performance evaluation, coaching, and corrective action.
- Ability to function effectively in a union environment while leading a non-union supervisory team.
- Bachelor's degree in a related discipline or field from an accredited college or university is preferred.
- Experience working in a union environment is preferred.
- Joint Commission experience is preferred.
- Previous night shift experience is beneficial for understanding off-hours operations and staffing needs.
- Healthcare-specific environmental services (EVS) experience is preferred.
- Experience in training development for environmental services or housekeeping staff is an asset.
- Experience in customer service within a medical or healthcare setting is advantageous.
- Familiarity with hospital facility operations and medical environment requirements is beneficial.
