General Superintendent – Tampa, FL (On-site) Orion has an immediate opening for a General Superintendent in Tampa, FL . This position is accountable for providing marine project leadership and direction to Orion Marine Construction, Inc. The incumbent reports to the Project Manager and directs field activities through the Project Superintendent and General Foremen or Foremen. The role closely collaborates with the Project Manager, Project Superintendent, General Foremen, Barge Foremen, Project (Field) Engineer, Safety Director, Boat Captain, Crane Operators, Pile Drivers, Welders, Carpenters, and other craft workers on the job site. Specific Responsibilities Works closely with the Project Manager to plan and execute marine construction projects and ensure their successful completion. Coordinates project objectives and plans with General Foremen and/or Foremen, and subcontractors as required before construction begins. Works with the project team to secure the equipment necessary for project completion. Attends pre-construction meetings to monitor project status and understand job scope and schedule. Reviews the job schedule and cost breakdown and meets with the Project Manager to identify potential challenges before work starts. Maintains a good working relationship with the Project Manager, seeking assistance in scheduling materials, equipment, and subcontractors. Sets up the job office and equipment trailers as required, ensuring permits, labor notices, safety rules, HR policies, and EEOC materials are posted. Works with the Human Resources Representative to recruit qualified applicants for all craft openings needed to staff the project. Communicates daily with the General Superintendent or Project Manager to update them on project status. Maintains inventory control over tools and equipment, ensuring movable tools are returned to the tool room and other equipment is stored properly. Ensures safety barricades and signs are in the proper place. Troubleshoots and problem‑solves construction issues as they arise. Ensures all change orders are properly executed as directed by the Project Manager or Project Superintendent. Meets regularly with General Foremen and/or Foremen to ensure project deadlines are met and work is completed on time. Inspects project work for quality to meet company standards and government regulations. Attends weekly Project Manager meetings to discuss progress and current problems. Monitors project expenditures versus projected costs, keeping expenditures under budget. Coordinates maintenance of heavy equipment and supervises effective utilization. Performs periodic inspections of job sites to ensure standardized construction procedures are followed. Works with the Safety Director to ensure all safety equipment and first aid items are present. Assists inspectors or auditors during scheduled or unscheduled visits. Ensures employees comply with Orion Marine Group Policies & Procedures, EEOC, and other regulatory guidelines. Holds all employees accountable for compliance with safety and operational policies and demonstrates safe work practices. Maintains good housekeeping practices and corrects potential safety hazards. Secures the project site after work hours with appropriate security measures. Ensures new employees receive safety training and job-specific training before beginning field assignments. Regularly updates the Project Manager on estimated percent completion of each project phase. Collaborates closely with the Project Superintendent, Barge Foreman, Crane Operators, Welders, and other craft workers to complete projects safely and environmentally soundly. Participates in safety and environmental initiatives to improve compliance with State and Federal regulations. Must be physically able to drive regular passenger vehicles to work locations and job sites. All employees must maintain confidentiality of proprietary information. Responsible for own personal safety, the safety of co‑workers, and anyone else encountered. Authorized and obligated to stop work if an unsafe condition or situation is observed. Complies with all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies. Reports any violations promptly, subject to disciplinary action if not done. Performs other related administrative and technical duties as assigned by supervision. Position Requirements • Minimum of ten (10) years marine construction experience on barges or job sites, or equivalent supervisory experience. • Well‑versed in the receipt and handling of equipment used for marine operations. • In-depth knowledge of integration of various crafts, including piledriving, crane operations, welding, carpentry, sandblasting, and pipefitting. • Previous supervisory experience and certification in First Aid and CPR. • Highly organized, able to oversee all aspects of the project, hold crews accountable for safety and performance excellence, anticipate potential problems, control job costs, influence and motivate crews, and communicate effectively. Physical/Mental Requirements The incumbent must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable workplace accommodation and wear appropriate PPE, including hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel‑toed shoes, and personal flotation devices as required. The role requires walking, stepping, climbing, and moving between work barges, boats, and dock facilities at varying heights, adapting to extreme temperature changes and outdoor conditions.
