Senior Data Engineer

The Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget (DTMB) is seeking an experienced Senior Data Engineer to support statewide portfolio reporting, business intelligence, and data analytics for the State Unified Information Technology Environment (SUITE) Investment Management program.

Requirements

• 4-7 years, minimum 3 years: Experience in data engineering, business intelligence, data analytics, or a related information technology discipline.
• Demonstrated experience designing, developing, implementing, and maintaining enterprise reporting and business intelligence solutions.
• Experience integrating, transforming, and analyzing data from multiple enterprise systems using SQL and modern data engineering techniques.
• Experience developing interactive dashboards, scorecards, and executive reporting using Microsoft Power BI or comparable business intelligence platforms.
• Experience gathering, analyzing, and documenting business requirements and translating those requirements into technical reporting and analytical solutions.
• Experience working directly with business stakeholders to define reporting requirements, key performance indicators (KPIs), and performance measures.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with demonstrated experience performing root cause analysis, identifying trends, and making data-driven recommendations.
• Experience developing and optimizing SQL queries, data models, and data transformation processes.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate technical information effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently while managing multiple assignments, priorities, and stakeholder expectations.

Desired Skills

• Project Portfolio Management (PPM) systems such as Clarity, ServiceNow PPM, Planview, Microsoft Project Online, or similar enterprise portfolio management platforms.
• Portfolio management, investment management, project governance, or executive portfolio reporting.
• Microsoft Power BI, Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Factory, Azure SQL, Microsoft SQL Server, or comparable Microsoft analytics technologies.
• Enterprise data warehousing, semantic models, or business intelligence architecture.
• Developing automated reporting solutions using APIs, ETL processes, scripting languages, or data integration platforms.
• Government, public sector, or other large enterprise reporting environments.
• Project management methodologies including PMI PMBOK, Agile, Scrum, Kanban, or SAFe.
• Financial management, capital investment management, or portfolio performance reporting

Minimum Education Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, Business Analytics, Management Information Systems, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or another closely related field. Equivalent combinations of education, technical training, professional certifications, and directly related experience may be considered.

Location Local candidates ONLY. Candidate MUST be located in Michigan at time of submission and be able to abide by the hybrid work schedule. Position is a hybrid schedule with NO REMOTE ONLY OPTION. Will need to be onsite from day 1, two days a week. Wednesdays and Thursdays are required onsite days. Working hours Monday-Friday, approximately 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Employment Terms This is a W2 position 40 hrs per week HYBRID schedule - NO REMOTE ONLY OPTION. Will need to be onsite from day 1, two days a week. Wednesdays and Thursdays are required onsite days.
